For the amount of help-related content we have on SurveyGizmo.com, we’ve been hearing from you now that it can be difficult to find the particular help you need to answer questions about how to make your online surveys smarter. So, as a first step to helping you find that content better, we’ve changed the internal search on SurveyGizmo.com, and are now using Google’s engine to power search within the site.
How the new search works
Right now, the search function works from the public site — if you want to search for something while you’re building a survey, open a new browser window and go to www.SurveyGizmo.com (our public site). The search box is visible on every page, and looks like this:
My search example is on piping, something that’s pretty useful if you know how to use it right. So, a little help might be in order, right?
After clicking the search button, my results come back. The cool thing about the results that Google returns is that they are broken up into tabs so you can choose what kind of help you want, as seen below. These are:
Tutorials: Help documentation that the staff of SurveyGizmo has put together that has step-by-step instructions on doing specific tasks.
Forums: Questions asked by SurveyGizmo account holders that are answered mostly by SurveyGizmo staff and sometimes by other SurveyGizmo users.
General: More helpful probably to people who are interested in finding out more about SurveyGizmo, this section will include FAQs, events, features and account pages.

We hope this change will help you better access the information that’s currently on the SurveyGizmo site while we spend more time building out other documentation improvements.

We are happy to announce the successful launch of SurveyGizmo’s New Email Invitation & Reminder Tool!
In 2007 we saw a huge interest in our old email invitation tool. Many marketers, researchers, educators and agencies all rely on email invitations as their primary technique for driving survey responses.
Well, they should love our new tool. It’s now easier to get complete surveys then ever before — and more reliable too!
Here’s a quick summary of this feature and instructions to get you started:

It’s Easy to Understand & Use
The most important thing we have done is to streamline the invitation screens to make creating, monitoring and managing the invitation process easier.
The process of creating an invitation is simple. Click on the ‘Create Invite’ button and then Edit your invitation’s message. One other improvement here is the ability to create both text and html email content. HTML content allows you to brand your email invitations to look just like your other email communications. Having text content gives SurveyGizmo the ability to automatically fallback to the text version when it suspects some of your email recipients don’t support HTML emails.
Scheduling & Auto-Reminders
Reminder emails can be sent manually, automatically skipping over any users who have already completed the survey. The following two paragraphs represent future improvements to email invitations.
There have been a lot of marketing studies about the best times to send emails depending on your audience. Well, with our new email invite tool you can pre-schedule an invitation to be sent — and also define a series of auto-reminders to be sent out x-days after a person receives the first invite!
“Does adding contacts after the first send mess up the auto responders?”
No! SurveyGizmo treats each person as an individual subscriber — so they’ll get auto-reminders x-days out from the time they first got their personal invitation. Also, SurveyGizmo will automatically stops sending reminders after the person completes their survey.
Content Testing & Spam Scores
There is nothing quite like sending out an email invitation only to realize a misspelling or poorly worded phrase has triggered every spam filter on the planet.
Now SurveyGizmo tests your content during the test phase and gives you your SPAM Score and outlines any other problems you might have.
Optimized Deliverability
Our new email software automatically manages a number of deliverability issues to help get your message through. SurveyGizmo now reports on bounces, unsubscribes and throttles delivery to domains such as yahoo, gmail, hotmail, aol, etc.
Unsubscribe Handling
This was the *most* asked for feature in 2007. SurveyGizmo automatically manages unsubscribe requests and will honor requests by your subscribers to stop getting email invitations.
Furthermore, because we *are* a survey company, you can provide an unsubscribe survey on the ‘unsub’ page and get feedback as to why they left your list.
Single Sends
Need to send an email invite to one person at a time? Odd as that may seem — it’s a common real-world need. Sometimes you forget to send an invite to someone until after you main blast has gone.
Now it’s as easy adding a single contact and pressing ’send’. They will get all the personalized reminders and be included in the invite’s tracking and stats.
Intergation via API
That’s right, our new SOAP API is completely integrated with our invitation system. You can manage contacts, lists, invites, messages, trigger sends, check spam scores… everything our application does natively. The API is free for all account levels, but you do need to contact support to gain access to these features.
Suggestions & Comments?
We hope you all make good use of our email invitation tool and enjoy it. If you have any suggestions and comments please make them below or email our team at support@sgizmo.com. Your continued feedback and support is what drives our improvements to SurveyGizmo!
Cheers,
- The SurveyGizmo Team

We are happy to announce that SurveyGizmo finally supports non-English characters completely as of this past weekend. For those of you located or who survey outside of the US, this should be welcome news indeed!
Previously, certain sections of the SurveyGizmo application would “garble” non-English characters — making your surveys unattractive and unreadable. Thanks to a lot of help from our customers in the Netherlands, we were finally able to solve this problem.
Also, we are looking for volunteers to help us translate SurveyGizmo into other languages. If this sounds like a project that interests you, please let us know. We are giving away free lifetime Professional accounts to individuals who help us translate our tool into a new language.
Best of luck on all your survey projects!
-The SurveyGizmo Team
Special Note: If you currently have a survey in SurveyGizmo that uses these characters, please check your survey over carefully. Our switch to become an international survey tool required us to switch to UTF-8 (a character code standard) from ISO-8859. Because of this you should confirm that your survey looks good now in UTF8 (only if you have surveys published in languages other than English). If you see any problems, just update the question that looks garbled once last time - and you will be good to go.

Now that we let people upload images, we thought we should give you a fun way to use them!
The new Image Chooser question type displays several images and allows your respondents to pick an image of their choice by clicking on it. Here’s what it looks like:

We can see some great uses for this, particularly for those of you who are testing logos and brand identity! And the good news is that it’s available for all accounts, even Free ones.
How to use add this question type to your survey:
All you need to do to use this question type is upload some images to your account (see our earlier post about uploading images) then go to your survey and click “add question.” The Image Chooser option is located with other multiple choice question types (as shown in the image below).

Just click on “Image Choice” and you’ll see a scrolling box with thumbnails of all your images. Choose the ones that you’d like to use for this question and then click the “Add this question” button. There! You now have a working image chooser.
As with all our questions, there are advanced options (like triggering other questions, etc) that can be accessed from the advanced question editor. You can also re-style the question using a little CSS magic.
Want to see a real-life example? From now until Weds, June 13th Big Fish Games (http://www.bigfishgames.com) is running a poll using this new image type. The poll is to determine a background option for their massive online community. Here it is: http://s-xi3q2-9564.sgizmo.com

Our New Feature Roster is packed with our enhancements to SurveyGizmo, but we want to make sure you don’t overlook a major new feature that many of you have requested: uploading files for use in your surveys. Now you can easily upload images, such as your company logo, and add them to your surveys. You’ll be able to include, say, PDF files for download via your thank-you page. And you can even allow survey respondents to download files, edit them, and upload them back into your survey.
The feature is available under the Templates and Files link on your SurveyBuilder home page:

Under the File & Image Library tab, simply click the Click Here To Upload Files button, and browse to a file on your hard drive. Then, when you are editing a survey, you can select the uploaded file via the Add Text/Images option.

Spread the word and make some cash! Many of you asked us for it, so here it is. Today we’re announcing the SurveyGizmo Affiliate Program, which lets you earn cash for your referrals. Anyone with a SurveyGizmo account — even a Free one — can direct people to our site through this program. And when your referrals sign up for paid accounts, you reap the reward: ${AccountDetails(plan4,monthly_cost);} for {AccountDetails(plan4,name);} sign-ups, {AccountDetails(plan3,monthly_cost,dollarformat);} for {AccountDetails(plan3,name);} sign-ups, and ${AccountDetails(plan2,monthly_cost);} for {AccountDetails(plan2,name);} sign-ups. Even if the referral doesn’t sign up for a paid account right away, you get the credit when they upgrade.
We provide the links for you to place on your Web site or in your opt-in emails. (We appreciate our users and want more, but we want absolutely nothing to do with any spamming!) After you activate your account, you can track it on your very own Affiliate tab, found under your Account page. Have other questions, such as how the program works? You’ll find all the nitty-gritty details on our SurveyGizmo Affiliate Program page.
Lastly, we invite you to take a look at our new Affiliate Program Forum. While you’re always welcome to comment on this and other blog postings here, we’d like to see a lively discussion on this program in our forums, so feel free to post your questions, comments and suggestions there as well.

New survey features added to SurveyGizmo this week.
- Show/Hide now works with drop-down menus
- Force Percent Formatting Major upgrade to percentage formatting. It now behaves much better and makes it more difficult to mis-enter data. It has also been added to tables of text boxes!
- sgUID Get Variable: A new special ‘get string’ or ‘url’ variable has been added. Passing a survey a sgUID will automatically de-dupe against that ID. This is perfect for membership websites and profile surveys!
- Helper Messages: Several new ‘helper’ messages have been added to the system to help you build surveys faster!
- Large Survey Editing: Large surveys automatically switch to page-by-page editing (which makes editing them MUCH easier and faster).

- Email Invites Upgraded: We have made dozens of small upgrades to the email invite code. It now allows larger blasts and editing of your invites.
- Also in email invites — if you forget to add a trackable survey link to your email the system will now warn you. This should help reduce embarrassing mistakes!
- New UI Feature!: We have updated the add-a-question screen to be, well… less primitive.
- Print Survey: This feature lets you print your survey. While not intended to become a “print survey,” it does make it easier to bring surveys to meetings and edit them offline.
- Result Graphs!: That’s right! You can now provide real-time pie and bar charts in your surveys. This is great for real-time polls.

One of the ways in which SurveyGizmo stands out is its reporting capabilities, with eye-catching graphs, valuable filtering tools, and numerous exporting options. (And that’s just for starters.) In addition, reports now offer new options, including the ability to remove duplicate responses by IP address and rounding percentages to whole numbers.
These options are outlined in an updated tutorial, Creating A Report: The Basics. We invite you to take a look!

- Easy Page Hiding: You can now set a page to hide-itself based on a question on a previous page. This is different from page jumping and works great with checkbox questions where each checkbox toggles a page of questions on or off.

- Embedable Survey Feeds: Now you can use JavaScript to embed a survey feed into a page. Then you schedule surveys to flow into the feed, allow you to change content without have to update your webpage
- “None of the above” options sticks to the bottom: If you add a radio button choice “None of the above” and turn on randomize option order, it will stay rooted to the bottom.
- Improved Javscript Embed: The javascript embed code is now shorter again and solves problems with line breaks destroying the code common in many Content Management Systems like WordPress.
- API Key On/OFF fixed: The API turn on system available on account page now works again! A bug was fixed that prevented the on state form staying on.

We’re excited to bring you our latest hot feature: the “friendly survey link.” The power is now in your hands; you have the ability to name your survey’s URL. No more seemingly random numbers must indicate which survey is yours. Instead, survey links can take the form of your company name (what we call your subdomain), followed by your survey name, followed by sgizmo.com. For example, you might name your survey acmecompany.customerservice.sgizmo.com (assuming you were with Acme Company, of course!) This feature is available to all accounts, and {AccountDetails(plan4,name);} accounts can use up to five different company names when creating survey links.
To use the friendly survey link feature, click the Publishing > Promote tab of a survey and scroll down to the section on promoting by Web or Email. Your company name has already been filled in for you, and when you begin typing the survey name, you’ll get real-time feedback about the validity of the survey name (that is, whether it has been used already). Also, your old survey links are still valid, but you can go back to an existing survey and add this feature if you choose.

You asked for enhanced reporting tools — and we’ve responded. Last week we launched an entirely new reporting platform. Now you can save multiple reports in different ways, display data in eye-catching new graphs, and run reports while simultaneously working on a survey in SurveyGizmo.
Think we’re kidding about the eye-catching charts? Check this out:

If you have any questions about how the reporting tools work, please take a look at our new tutorials on:
Stay tuned: Next week we plan to launch expanded filtering and graphic configuration reporting tools. The new platform gives us the ability to more easily roll new features into reporting, and you’ll be seeing these features over the next few months. Do you have a particular type of report you’d like to see? Please add a comment to this blog post or email us at support@sgizmo.com.

We have a new basic Job Application survey template now for use. You can easily modify it to meet your specific needs. As always, you can find it listed under templates when you create a survey. This one is already set up to be easily embedded in your web site (the JavaScript embed method works great), but you can change the look and feel so it makes a nice standalone page, too.
Here is a sample:

Advanced Features
If you have one of our paid account levels, you can make the form even more useful by adding an Email Auto-responder Action or a File Upload Survey Question. The File Upload is a great way to receive resumes, work samples, etc. You can receive Word Docs, PDFs, or images, and then download them when viewing the responses in the Browse Responses section of the Reporting Tab.
To add an Email Autoresponder you’ll need at to have at least a Personal Level account. While in the survey editor, scroll down to your Thank You page and click “Add Action,” select “Send Email,” and then fill out the associated fields. To add a File Uploader, you’ll need a Professional or Enterprise account. Simply click Add Question and choose type File Upload.

We couldn’t help but notice all the searches for myspace survey functionality. So here it is — surveys you can embed in MySpace (or other difficult CMS systems)!
Want to see it in action? Here is an example of our contact form embedded into a MySpace profile: http://www.myspace.com/SurveyGizmo. You can create contact forms, surveys, newsletter signups, fun quizzes — anything. We’d love to know what you do with this feature, so get a survey up and post your results to this blog!
Instructions: To use this feature, design a survey in SurveyGizmo (some myspace design tips are listed below). Then, just like normal, click on the “Launch” link (or promote if your survey is already launched). A new option has been added to the bottom of this screen called “Option 3 - MySpace, yada yada yada”. This will give you the css and html to paste into your MySpace profile.

Some helpful tips:
- Don’t use complicated survey questions on the first page — good news, subsequent pages are totally fair game! This is because anything powered (or enhanced) by javascript won’t work on myspace — go figure.
- Here are the ‘Safe’ questions: Instructions, Images, Radio buttons, Checkboxes, Text fields, Essays, File upload forms, Contact questions and tables of the aforementioned.
- If you want, redirect them back to your blog or profile when they are done. You can do this by placing a URL redirect action on the thank you page.
- Lastly, this survey-publishing option doesn’t track abandons the way our other surveys do (a quirk of bypassing our initial page). So, don’t expect that data for myspace surveys.
Taking this feature to the next step: Before you ask, yes, it has occured to us that this feature might lend itself to embedding surveys in HTML emails, too. We suggest you don’t jump the gun on *that one* unless you can afford some time for testing. In the next few weeks we will do our own testing of email-embedded surveys and let everyone know how it turns out.
Good luck with your surveys!

SurveyGizmo - not just for surveys anymore.
This is the first of two how-to articles on using SurveyGizmo to create Contact Forms, Lead Gen Forms, Support Requests, Newsletter Signups, or any kind of custom form. SurveyGizmo makes a great all-purpose web form tool for embedding data-collection forms on your website. We use the term “survey” frequently around here (duh!) but take it to mean any kind of data collection. The word “survey’ here can easily stand in for web form, and vice versa.
No need to get the IT department involved or set up custom processing code. Just add your questions and drop a small snippet of code on your website - done! Plus, you get some special features that you can’t get from a regular web form.
- Track complete vs. abandon stats
- Send email auto-responders (as with many forms), but also have a downloadable text file with contact info.
- Send your data to more than one place - i.e. accept newsletter subscriptions as part of a contact form and post the subscription back to your Email Service Provider’s API.
This week we have several new, related updates
- New Tutorial: Creating Contact, Lead Generation, Newsletter, and Support Forms
- New Question Templates: 4 new templates for quick form setup
- Contact Form - Simple
- Contact Form - Extended
- Support Form
- Newsletter Signup - Extended
- New Look & Feel Template: a Contact Form/Embedded design template with clean simplicity for embedding surveys into your website smoothly
You can see examples in use on our own SurveyGizmo contact form and Widgix contact form. We have reprinted the tutorial here for convenience, but you can find it and others on the SurveyGizmo Tutorial pages.
A single-step contact form means that users fill out a single page, and then they see a thank you after submitting.

Step 1: Create a new survey using one of our contact form templates
Create a new survey and choose one of the contact form templates that seems closest to your need.
- Contact Form - Simple
- Contact Form - Extended
- Support Form
- Newsletter Signup - Extended
You can and should edit the questions and layout, so just pick something similar. Read more about the basics of creating a new survey.
The templates all have examples of forms and email auto-responders.

Step 2: Edit the questions
Modify the questions to suit your needs. Clicking the notepad icon will allow you to modify many options. You can also add or reorder questions.
Step 3: Handling the submitted data
You have to decide what happens after the user clicks the submit button. Every data form or survey in SurveyGizmo always has at least two pages. The second page acts as a Thank You page, but it can also hold actions to act on the data collected. Use these actions to send email or push data.
- Email auto-responders
- All of the Contact forms contain examples of email auto-responders. You can modify these or add additional ones. You can read more about setting up Email Auto-responders here.
- Pushing information out of SurveyGizmo
- SurveyGizmo Pro and Enterprise accounts have access to an Action type called HTTP Post. This is used to push data to outside services like Email lists, newsletter signups, customer databases, etc. You can transmit information to other outside services such as SalesForce.com, Constant Contact, Campaign Monitor, etc.
Step 4: Modify your look and feel
When you are finished with your questions, it’s time to move on to modify your look and feel. If you used one of our Contact Form Templates, it already comes with a look and feel template that is well-suited to being embedded on a website.
You may, however, want to tweak the width of the form, the font size or font family, text color, the background color, or Submit Button text. You can change all those things on the Look & Feel tab. You can also select different templates or modify the HTML or CSS if desired.

You can click “Preview” to view the included Look & Feel or modifications. For you designers out there - it is also possible to modify the look of a survey by adding CSS to your site that acts on the survey form’s ID and Class names.
Step 5: Embed the form on your site
When you are happy with your preview, it’s time to “Launch” (publish) the Contact Form. Clicking Launch will take you to the Publishing tab. You’ll most likely want the Embed Option 2 - the Javascript Option. You can cut and paste this small snippet of Javascript code and place it on the page in your website where you want the form.
Usually you’ll create a blank Contact Us page on your own site using your own template/design. When the page is viewed, the form will fill in dynamically and be wrapped in your site’s design.

A Special note to WordPress or other CMS users like Drupal, etc.
You can create a page or a post and paste in the Javascript snippet. You need to make sure you paste the Javascript code into the HTML, so if you are using the Rich Text Editor click on the HTML button and paste the code in there. If you paste it in the Rich Text Editor directly it won’t work, because the code will be interpreted as copy text.
You’re done - go visit the page and test your form!
Email auto-responders will run immediately (unless you set a time delay). Stats will begin to show up in 10 - 20 minutes. It’s useful to think of the “Abandoned” data as “views” on your form where someone didn’t fill it in. This is natural on most web sites, but if you feel more people should be filling out the form, you might make changes and compare the data over time to achieve a more useful form.
If you create some forms, feel free to post links here to show them off.

We have added new tools and tutorials to make it easier to build better email auto-responders for your surveys. With the Merge Helper and Email Merge Helper, you can incorporate values from your survey automatically into a survey triggered email auto-responder.
What can you use the Email Auto-responders for?
- Notifying you of each survey taken and providing you a copy of the results
- Sending a name-customized confirmation to survey takers to thank them
- Providing a copy of answers back to respondents - good for tests or quizzes
- Confirming the opt-in to someone joining your newsletter list or submitting a customer service contact form
- Get fancy - Use our landing page template for a “Top Ten Tips on _______.” Then, send then one tip a day, automatically scheduled, over the next ten days.
Use the new Merge Helper to grab any value from a survey and insert it into your survey. You can read more about Auto-responders and the Merge Helper in this tutorial.

Survey Templates
Last week we released new survey templates, but this is the first chance we have had to blog about it. When creating a survey, now you can choose from blank, one of our templates, or a copy of one of your own surveys. Right now there are just three templates, but we’ll be bringing on more. We also encourage user-submitted templates as well!
Keep in mind the survey templates are sets of sample questions. They can be paired with any look & feel template. They can also easily be edited or adapted as you need. Remove, add or edit questions as desired.

You can also preview a template before choosing it.
You can check these survey templates out here

How many times have you wanted to quickly send out an invitation for a survey, then follow up with anyone who hasn’t finished it? How about emailing those who complete your survey to say ‘thank you’ or share final results with them?
Good news — we have just released a survey email invitation tool that lets anyone with a personal, professional or enterprise account do all of that!
With the Email Invites tool you can:
- Upload email addresses. You can upload from Excel, text files or you can cut and paste into our text-entry.
- Send an email. Seems basic, but we give you some extra oomph to make sending emails more exciting. You can that automatically merge in name, company, email, and of course the unique survey link.
- Track Individuals - Survey invitations let you track survey responses back to the original contact — even if your survey doesn’t ask for contact information.
- Track click-through’s, visits, abandoned surveys, and completed surveys.
- Send followup emails as a reminder to complete the survey, a thank you, or to share the results with takers.
You can create as many email invites as you like for a survey (each invite is limited to 1000 contacts in one send). Sending to different groups lets you track the results separately.
Need to boost your result count? Send as many ‘followup’ emails
