Hi,
I'm trying to export the data from our Insurance and Managed Care Poll and I've set certain variables to display the reporting value in SPSS, yet they all come back as four-digit numbers. One question asks to select a state from a drop-down menu. In SPSS, that data comes back as numbers, when the reporting value was the name of the state.
Suggestions?
Thanks,
-Omar

Hello, Omar!
One of the quirks of SPSS is that all of the data imported into the program MUST be numeric. SPSS does not handle textual reporting values; so we have built our exporter keeping that in mind. If we were to export the state “Colorado” as “Co”, SPSS would not be able to read it, so the exporter looks through your data and replaces any text-based reporting values with numbers starting at 1000 and incrementing by one for each textual reporting value that needs to be replaced.

Hi Jonathan,
Thanks for the reply! SPSS has string variables. Couldn't SG report the states data from the pre-fill lists as string data? In the data file I exported, it didn't convert all non-numeric data to numbers. Just seems odd to me that some text data is converted and some is not.
Also, it looks like the Excel export isn't working properly either. I can't get any data in any kind of spreadsheet.
Thanks!
-Omar

Hey, Omar!
You know, you're right! I had completely forgotten about that! /shame
When you go to export your data to SPSS, on the far right of the export page is a column labeled “SPSS Type”, we do have a default type for each question type within SurveyGizmo, but you can change the drop-down menu in this column to select what type of data you want to set it to, including String().
Which survey are you trying to export where you get a blank Excel sheet? I'd really like to fix that ASAP.
