I have about 4 questions I want at the beginning of my survey and about 2 questions I want at the end of my survey.

But I have about 90 questions in the middle of my survey. It would be nice if I could make the middle 90 questions show up in random order.

This way the beginning questions of my middle 90 don’t get more attention the the ending questions of my middle 90. The problem with long surveys is people start to get bored and lose focus.

I am doing one long survey now and plan on doing another one next month. It is too late for this one, but boy it sure would be nice for my next one.

Tyler,

Great idea and rediculously easy to impliment. We had another feature that brought this request 70% of the way there.

I just added this feature to the Survey Page Options. It’s a checkbox called “Randomize Questions on this page”. Just check it and all questions on that page (mind you, I do mean all of them, including any descriptive text and images) will be displayed in random order.

Another feature you might want to concider is the “show X Number of questions on this page” which randomly chooses a x number of questions on a page and displays them. It’s a great way to reduce the number of questions you ask each respondant, but still ask a large number of questions. Provided your survey population is large enough.

Keep up the great suggestions Tyler!

I don’t think I can take advantage of those two options.

Every page has three questions that are related to each other and I want those three questions on each page to be in a certain order.

Plus, I need my beginning pages (introduction pages) and ending pages (wrap up thank you pages) to stay where they are, but just randomize the middle pages.

Tyler,

The second option (XNumber feature) does let you tie questions togeather and force certain questions to always be present.

Both options are page specific. So you can choose which pages have them and which pages do not. The other pages of your survey are not effected.

As far as those three questions. You might be able to put them into a “Custom Group” which is an advanced question type that lets you create a group of different questions in a single container.

If you did that, then the questions would stay togeather when the page randomizes. The only downside to my knowledge is that the custom group doesn’t allow table questions.

Nonetheless, a easier way to randomize the view order of pages would be nice.

I agree! Is there a way to randomize the order in which the pages appear? I have 1 question per page, so I can't advantage of the “randomize questions in this page” feature. Any suggestions as to how I can have questions randomized, yet keep the 1 question at a time format?

Many thanks in advance!

Florencia.

Hi Florencia,

There is.  “Page Randomization” can be found under the “Advanced Options” link in the survey editor.  Simply check off which pages you want to be randomized.

Leaving a page unchecked will cause it to hold position.  That way you don't worry about randomizing your intro and thank you pages!

I hope this helps!

Cheers,

-Christian

Hi, Christian,

I am very interested in trying the “Page Randomization” option for my survey, but I can’t seem to find it under Advanced Options page. Could you give me more details how to find it? Also, is it a Pro account only feature?

Best regards,
Vans

Hi, Vans.

The page randomization is an Enterprise level feature. You can access it via Edit Survey => Advanced Options.

Thanks for your interest, Vans!

I am also interested in the randomising feature. My survey needs to have 4 groups of 4 pages and each respondent would answer 1 page of questions from each of the 4 groups. The questions from the 4 groups should be random. Any ideas how to do this?

Hello, Helen!

Our randomization feature is available and fully functional, but we don't yet offer the ability to randomize in “groups” like you've mentioned. We're working on it as a future upgrade – and there is a current work-around. You can actually create 4 different surveys, one for each group, randomize those pages and use a Redirect Action to send your respondents from one survey to the next.

I hope this helps!

Hey, Helen!

Sure!

Basically, you'll just want to create 4 different surveys – one for each “group” of pages you want to randomize.

In those surveys, set your pages to be randomized, then make a Redirect Browser action at the end of each survey (on the “Thank You” page) that sends the survey takers to the next survey automatically.

All of the surveys will need to be in a “Published” status when you create your redirect actions so that you can get each survey's URL from the “Publish” tab.

Hi Jonathan,

I didn't explain myself very well i think.

I'll try again. Sorry to be confusing.

I need 4 different groups of respondents (a,b,c or d) to answer 4 different groups of questions (either 1,2,3 or 4). I need a randomizer to assign who gets which survey. The randomizer should be able to pick whether respondent 'a' gets survey 1,2,3 or 4. Each respondent will get 1 survey out of the 4 groups.

Does that make more sense now?

Thank you,

Helen

Hi Helen!

I see what you're talking about :)

What you'll want to do is use our branching logic.  This will work like an a/b/c/d split test. You'll create a split for each group of respondents with corresponding questions.  Then they will be randomly assigned to a split when they come to take your survey. The branching capability comes in at our Pro level.

If there is anything else we can help with, please let us know.

Thanks!

Brittany
