I would really like to be able to specify an “Other” option that allows for respondents to specify a free-form item for the ranking. I can put it in as a separate question, but it’d be really nice to have it inline.

In fact, it seems like the “other” is lacking in some of the matrix question types as well. Or am I just missing something?

“Normal” matrix questions don’t support other fields. However at the bottom of the add question screen there is a new Matrix type called “Custom Matrix” that does let you mix multiple choice & other fields types into the same question.

I’ll look into the Ranking question. It should have the ability to create an “other field” (it’s based on a question that supports it). It might be as simple as creating a UI option. (You have to love OOP).

I’d like to add a vote for this feature as well. Could have used it on a few questions recently.

I have one question where 7 points are listed and they should rank 5 of them. I’m not so happy with the actually ranking tool, so I tried to use the multiple textboxes. I think this would work for me, but I would like to have two additional fields where the persons can add other points plus rank them. This would mean I need two textboxes.
–>one for the ranking and the second one for the additional point!!

Is this possible? I am using at the moment the free account, but will upgrade to the pro account then!
Is it maybe possible with this account?

Thanks!

Hi Kelle,

I am a little unclear on what it is that you are describing. What we don’t understand is why you would only want to choose 5 out of the 7 for a ranking question. The main concept of a ranking question is to rank all of the given options. What is the deciding factor for you on why you would not want to allow them to rank the extra two and how do you pick the extra two? How are you eliminating these options from your survey?

I am sorry to hear that you are disappointed with our ranking question. What sort of recommendations could you propose to make this feature better? At SurveyGizmo, we take our customer ideas to heart. After all, you are the ones using it.

Get back to me and let me know!

Hey,

Thank you for the response! Will try to explain again what i mean:

I want 5 given options and 2 empty textboxes. The textboxes then only apply when one or two of the given options doesnt fit. At the end I only want 5 options ranked and from 1-5. Is this clearly expressed? Can this cause problems when evaluating the data in the end?

To answer your question about the ranking questions: they can be good when there are only a few options but otherwise it takes to many “clicks”.

Thanks again!^

Hi Kelle,

Let me jump in and take a stab at this question, since I’ve seen a few like it before.

I think the best solution might be a combination of questions since no single question type will handle it.

You could use a multiple select (checkbox) with your default answers and 1 or more “Other” write in fields. Then set the max number of allowable boxes they can select at 5. Then on the following page use Piping to push those answers into a Ranking question. That way only the answers they needed are ranked.

Hope it helps.

I have a series of ranking questions – and I'm trying to figure out how to use the custom matrix option to have the 6 or so items ranked, but to also include an “other/specify” textbox in the setup.

Hi Judy,

Unfortunately at this time our custom matrix questions don't include our ranking question, but what you could do is similar to Scott's explaination above.

You could create a pre-qualifiing question asking the survey takers if they use those 6 options and if they would like to add more (using the muli-select checkbox question with an “Other” write-in field at the bottom).   Change the minimum and maximum number of selections to 6 and then have those answered Piped to a ranking question on the next page.

Hope that helps!
