Currently with the Export to Excel:
Fields left blank whom have a Field Type “Table” do not get exported to the Excel file. This is very problematic when importing into Access or other databases.
When I start a survey the export will exclude fields till at least one person fills in the data for the field.
Problematic is also the dual line header for Table Fields. Most import programs only have the ability to import the field names from the first line of the import.
To fix both these problems it would be nice to have two check boxes on the export to allow all Empty table fields and Single Header row.
Perhaps the Ability to check mark a box to use the “Optional Reference Name:” as a field name. You would have to expand the Table type to allow a Reference Name for each field in the group though.
So you would end up with a composite filed name:
HOMEPHONE + AREACODE = ResultantFieldname
HOMEPHONE + 3DigitExchange = ResultantFieldname
HOMEPHONE + 4DigitExchange = ResultantFieldname
WORKPHONE + AREACODE = ResultantFieldname
WORKPHONE + 3DigitExchange = ResultantFieldname
WORKPHONE + 4DigitExchange = ResultantFieldname

Hi Daniel,
Thanks for the suggestions!
Yes, we’ve had quite a few requests to show unanswered questions and options.
Our system was built to conserve on space. In particular columns in an Excel spreadsheet (you are limited to 255 columns in Excel). We have since found a work around to that limit, but the system is still built with conservation in mind.
Since this touches on the basis of our reporting and response collection system it won’t be an easy change. That being said we do plan on upgrading the system before the end of the year, when we upgrade reporting.
I like your suggestion for combined column headers. I’ll pass this suggestion along to our developers. It will probably be added to the reporting upgrade that’s coming up.
Hope this helps,
Chad

I'm a trial user and if I adopt surveygizmo I will need to export data to a database compatible format. Have the issues raised in this post been addressed or resolved?
I'm very much hoping that the product offers a way to export usable data files because the survey programming function is just terrific.
For usable data exports, a single row of field names in Row 1 is crucial. And the option to create descriptive field names for matrix questions constructed from row labels and column labels appended to a brief text stem is also indispensable.
An option to export tab-delimited (tsv) files rather than comma-delimited ones would be much superior in that comma delimited data can be rendered unreadable if a respondent uses a comma in a text field.
Please keep me posted! Thanks, Kathy

In regards to CSVs, if a comma is present in their response it is placed within double quotes (the entire item) to allow for commas.
We are addressing the inclusion of all columns within version 2.x of SurveyGizmo, slated for early next year, so it is in development, just not currently available (we are still on v1).

Is this due to be released soon? These features are required for basic data exporting.
Additionally, an item that is tough to use is when a report is exported to Excel, it comes out with every column in the survey in one cell of the Excel file. This renders the Excel export totally useless. Will this be fixed in v2?
One more thing… an option for a 2-column layout would be nice too. The look and usability of just vertical layouts are poor.
Thanks,
Chris

Hi, Chris.
Version 2 should be out sometime this year…but no promise as to release date.
If you use Excel 2007 to open a csv export, you should get the data in columns. Excel 2003 does show everything in one cell. You will have to use the newer Excel to see it correctly.
Two column layout would be nice. You are welcome to create your own templates as you have full access to your html/css via Edit Survey => Look&Feel.
Thanks,
Cheri
