How do I adjust my settings so that participants can only take the survey once?

Good Morning Robin!

(Or good afternoon depending on your timezone)

In order to lock your survey you need to use our “Vote Protection” feature. This is found under “advanced options” in the survey editor. It’s a Pro+ feature. If you don’t see it check which account plan you are using.

Vote protection comes in two flavors. By IP (which is more difficult to fool) and cookie-based. Usually we suggest you go with ‘cookie’.

I hope this helps!

Cheers,

-Christian

This is a permanent, not a session cookie, right?

Hi Lisa,
Yup! It’s a persistent (permanent) cookie.

Hope this helps!

Thanks, Chad. Due to privacy policy issues, we can’t use persistent cookies but we might be able to use them if they expire at some point. Is there any way to set an expiration date for persistent cookies or would that be a new feature?

Hi Lisa,
The Vote protection cookie will last for one year. There isn’t currently a way to set the cookie timeout.

Chad,
With the persistant (permanent) cookie, can a respondent fill out part of a survey, and return to it later to complete it on the same computer if they get interrupted? If they complete it, and decide they want to change their answers, are they blocked out?

scenario 1: respondent clicks survey link, answers some not all questions, gets interrupted, closes browser. Comes back later. Can he/she start where they left off?

scenario 2: respondent clicks survey link, answers some not all questions, leaves browser open for more than a few minutes. Comes back later. Can he/she start where they left off?

scenario 3: respondent completes survey. returns later to change his answers. clicks survey link. Can he retake the survey?

Hi gcat,
If you’re using Vote Protection by Cookie. Then yes, a respondent can return to a survey if it’s only Partially completed. Once they fully complete the survey they are locked out.

scenario 1: Correct they can come back later (provided they have the means to), but no they cannot return to where they left off (we’re currently working on an upgrade to this).

scenario 2: Correct they can return to a survey left open up to 20 minutes. Afterwhich a survey times out and they should close the window and return to the survey through a link or bookmark.

scenario 3: If a respondent completes the survey and you have Vote Protection enabled then they CANNOT start a new survey. The exception to this is if they some how bypass the protection: Delete the cookie, switch browsers/computers, etc.

Hope this helps,
Chad
