Hi - I'm thinking of buying your software (I like the look and feel) but I'm trying to work out if it will do what I need first.  I need to ask a question that has a list of software (in rows) and frequency of use as the column headings.

I then want people to be directed to follow up questions based on how frequently they use the software.  If I can help it I want them to complete the matrix of software/usage first and then be sent to the approriate questions rather then having to be asked a question for each piece of software  and then being given follow up questions (if appropriate), mainly because it will make the survey neater and easier to complete.

Can I do it?

Thanks

Cathy

PS I've had a look in the forums to see if someone else has asked this question and I don't think they have - sorry if I've missed something.

The short answer is it is possible in surveygizmo, but it would require the Custom Scripting action to create this behaviour off of rows in a table.  You are correct that using the simple user interface tools this is possible if you did not have each option as part of a table but as individual questions.

With complexity comes… complexity. :)

Hello,

I'm not sure if my question is exactly the same as Cathy's but it seems similar.  I just registered for the free version of surveygizmo on the recommendation of a colleague.

I am looking to set up a survey in which respondents are first presented with a list of organizations and asked to check only those which they are familiar (check all that apply).  Then, there is a series of follow-up questions in which respondents are asked to rate each agency on various dimensions.  However, for the ratings portion of the survey, I'd like the list populated only with those agencies the respondent selected in the first question.

Is this possible?  How would I go about setting this up?  Is it piping?  I understand that I may have to upgrade to a higher level of membership - what level would I need in order to construct something like this?

Thank you,

Erica

Hello, Erica.

Yes, piping will work.

First, remember that piping must always go across pages because SurveyGizmo needs data so it knows what to pipe.

Let's say the question where you ask if respondents have heard of specific agencies is a checkbox question.

For the ratings, let's say you want to set up a table to rate the agencies.

Create your ratings question on a page subsequent to where you asked respondents if they had heard of specific agencies.

For the ratings table, select the question type Table/Matrix of radio buttons. Put ratings labels in the columns (e.g. Excellent, Good, Fair and Poor). When initially creating the table, SurveyGizmo will require you to put something in the row box. Put iin a placeholder such as a dash which will come out later.

Save question.

Go into Advanced Edit (the little notebook on the left side) on the table question. Delete the row that you had put in as a placeholder. Then go to the bottom of the page and find the dropdown labeled 'Pipe from Question'. Select the question that you want the information piped from and save changes.

Each row on a table is actually a separate question, so you can use Question Piping to bring in the answers from the first question.

So, in this case of piping into the row of a table, Question Piping works. Option piping (covered below) can only pipe into columns on a table, not rows.

Now let's consider piping the responses in the first question into a  ranking question. In this case, you can use option piping. Here's how to pipe into a ranking question:

Click the add question link and select the 'Ranking' question type. Put in question title and a placeholder (i use a space) for a row and save.

Then go into Advanced Edit on the ranking question and delete the placeholder if it's there. Then go to the bottom of the page to the 'Pipe From Options' dropdown and select the question you are piping from.  Save changes.

Now the answers from the first question will be piped into the ranking question. This demonstrates option piping.

Pro and Enterprise accounts can do this.

The drop down selctions in the columns, I need to be different.

How do I do this. I have tried the custom matrix feature but just can't figure it out?

Hi, Cormac.

You can do this with a custom matrix which is a question type.

To set this up, click on the Add Question button in your survey and select the radio button labeled 'Custom Matrix (multiple field types)'.

Type in your question in the Question Title Box.

Fill in the Row Headings box, one label per line.

Click the Add Question button at the bottom of the page.

Once the question is created, click on Advanced Edit (the little notebook on the left side). On the page that opens  up, go to the section labeled 'Horizontal Questions (Grouped)', Group 1. Put in the Group Title (this will be your first column label). Then set the dropdown box to Menu. You can paste in your dropdown menu content in the box labeled 'Sub-columns'.

Click on the button labeled 'Add a New Column Group'. Fill in the Group Title (this will be your column 2 label). Set the dropdown box to Menu and paste in your dropdown menu content.

Click Save Changes at the bottom of the page.

You are all set to go!
