In our survey, we have a number of branches, and respondents can skip large portions of the survey based on their responses. The progress bar seems to assume the shortest completion time, and so skips from 98% done on the second screen, to 10% done on the third. It is mostly consistent after that, with a few smaller backwards jumps. This is rather frustrating for respondents–we don’t want to tell them they are making backwards progress!

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Julia,
Correct, our progress bar works by counting the total number of un-hidden pages and dividing by the page you’re currently on.

Thus if you have logic that un-hides pages or jumps backwards in the survey, the progress bar will also move backward.

Unless the progress bar can predict the survey takers answers, the only solution to this is to make the progress bar forward only. That is, once it gets to 98% it will not go backward, this would make it less accurate and would not be a desirable solution.

In this case the simplest solution would be to remove the progress bar since it’s more of a hindrance than a help. You can do this by going to Edit Survey->Look & Feel. Alternatively, if your survey is predictable enough you can use descriptive text fields at the bottom of each page telling the survey taker how far they have left to go.

Hope this helps,
Chad

Chad, re “the only solution to this is to make the progress bar forward only. That is, once it gets to 98% it will not go backward” … How do I do this? I can see an option for making the entire survey forward only (removing back buttons) but I only wish to make the progress bar forward only and leave the back buttons…

Hi, Dominic.

The only way to make the progress bar forward only is to make your whole survey forward only. I think Chad was just trying to point out how it wasn’t a good solution.

Thanks Cheri. I reckon it’s the best solution at the moment for us unfortunately, as we’ve got alot of questions (32) and without a progress bar — and one that doesn’t jump about — it’s a bit daunting. But thanks for the advice, which I’ve implemented. Dominic.
