exported to spss – data issues

I downloaded my survey responses to spss.  Now, in SPSS, I have edited and coded the data in variable view, but when I switch to data, the data looks the same as when I downloaded it.  I cannot get the data into the codes.  Therefore, I can see the information in the variable view, but in data view, the cells have responses like 1000, 1001, 1020, etc.  I cannot figure this out.

So, I thought that maybe I should try exporting to Excel, then to SPSS.  Looking now at the data in Excel, this is exactly what I should be seeing in SPSS.

I have tried and tried to find the problem with what I am doing in SPSS, but it appears that I have edited and coded correctly.  Now I am thinking that I did something wrong in exporting the data to SPSS.

Any ideas on the best way to work this problem out?  At this point, I seem to be running around in circles.

Values that cannot be evaluated numerically are given numbers in the 1000 range by SurveyGizmo upon export for SPSS, which is why you are seeing that behaviour.

If you are having further confusion, I would recommend clicking HELP in the top-right of SurveyGizmo (once logged in) and ssending an email to support with the survey information and specific questions where this confusion is occurring and we can better give you feedback.
