Hello!  I'm a graduate student who signed up for a free account. I'm hoping to collect data via SurveyGizmo, export them to Excel or CSV and import them to SPSS for statistical analyses.

I've had my very first question while creating a survey. I want age to be a continuous variable, so I don't want to make it a multiple choice question. Could anyone advise me on which form option I should use for a continous variable? I thought about using a text box and asking people to type their age in number, but then when I export the data, they will be considered text, not number, won't they?

I would appreciate any other tips for how to set up questions to prevent potential problems with exporting data to Excel or CSV.

Hi,

You could use a textbox. If you do, it's a good idea to go into Advanced Edit (the little notebook on the left side) of the the question and set the Auto Format to whole numbers only. When you are designing your report, SurveyGizmo will ask you how you want to treat the textbox — as text, numbers or percentages.

Here's a tip: If you are collecting contact information, use the contact information question type rather than textboxes. Then all of the contact information will be kept together on your export.
