High quality principals are essential to school success. Great principals embrace high expectations for students, use data effectively, attract and retain excellent teachers, and are strong instructional leaders. You can use this self-assessment tool to evaluate your own leadership and school culture and learn strategies to improve your practice. You can use this tool as an individual, with other principals from your district, or with the instructional leadership team in your school.

Pillar I: Embracing High Standards

Embracing high standards for all students is crucial to Tennessee's success. Research shows that when teachers increase their expectations for student success, those students make academic gains. The questions below will help you assess how well you and teachers in your school embrace and communicate high standards.

1. My school sets high standards for all students, regardless of track or level. *This question is required.(For example, 2011 SCORE Prize winner Power Center Academy begins the conversation about college-readiness with its students from Day 1.)
2. Policies and structures in the district foster and support high expectations. *This question is required.(For example, 2012 SCORE Prize winner Covington High School posts the ACT college-readiness standards in its classrooms and requires its teachers to devote part of their instructional time to the ACT.)
3. I communicate expectations clearly with my teachers and staff. *This question is required.
4. School expectations and standards are communicated clearly to parents and the community. *This question is required.(For example, 2011 SCORE Prize winner Fairview Elementary hosts events for parents and community partners to invite them to become partners in children's learning and to inform them about what students should know and be able to do.
