PARENT SELF-ASSESSMENT TOOL

Pillar I: Embracing High Standards

Parents play a crucial role in supporting the education of their children. Family engagement in education, in particular having high expectations for children, can lead to improvements in academic achievement. Effective partnerships between parents and schools revolve around having shared expectations for students, using data to gauge student progress, and working with schools to identify ways parents can support and reinforce learning at home. You can use this self-assessment tool to evaluate your child’s school and identify ways that you can improve your partnership with teachers and administrators. You can use this tool as an individual, with a parent-teacher organization, or other parents in your school community.

Pillar I: Embracing High Standards

Embracing high standards for all students is crucial to Tennessee’s success. Research shows that when teachers increase their expectations for student success, those students make academic gains. The questions below will help you assess how well your child’s school embraces and communicates high standards.

1. Teachers and principals at my child's school have high academic expectations for all students' futures. *This question is required.(For example, 2011 SCORE Prize winner Power Center Academy begins the conversation about college-readiness from Day 1.)
2. The school's policies and rules encourage students to complete challenging coursework. *This question is required.(For example, in many SCORE Prize finalist and winning schools, students who are doing well in their classes are not allowed to take less difficult courses.)
3. School expectations and standards are communicated clearly to me. *This question is required.
4. My child's teachers clearly tell my child what they expect from him/her. *This question is required.
5. My child is enrolled in challenging classes. *This question is required.
6. My child’s school measures progress towards the academic goals it expects students to meet throughout the year. *This question is required.
7. My child is held accountable by the school for meeting academic goals. *This question is required.(For example, 2012 SCORE Prize winner Covington High School holds a daily "academic detention," which is required of all students not meeting academic goals.)
