Dear colleague,
We would like to invite you to carry out a short survey as part of a European Commission’s funded project called ‘LoCloud’. We are one of the
32 project partners and we have developed this survey in order to identify house-museums in Europe holding digital collections, for a possible inclusion in
Europeana.
Europeana is an on-line portal providing access to the digitised content of Europe's galleries, libraries, museums, archives and audiovisual collections. It currently includes over 26 million books, photographs, paintings, films, sound recordings and archival resources from more than 2,200 institutions in every European member state.
The digital objects that users can find on Europeana are not stored on a central computer, but remain with the cultural institution and are hosted on their network. Europeana simply collects contextual information (metadata) about the items, which remain stored on the servers of the respective content contributing institutions. Cultural institutions collaborating with Europeana organise their digitised content in such a way that this search is possible. At the same time they keep full control over their content.

LoCloud (started in March 2013) is one of a suite of projects, funded by the European Commission, to contribute to further develop Europeana and enhance its digital contents. The project will explore the potential of cloud computing technologies for Europeana, with a focus on small and medium sized institutions, including house-museums. It aims to support them in making their content and metadata available to Europeana. LoCloud is co-funded by the European Commission's ICT Policy Support Programme.
