Informed Consent Protocol Title: The acquisition of pragmatics in second language acquisition

Please read this consent document carefully before you decide to participate in this study.

Purpose of the research study: The purpose of this study is to examine the acquisition of Spanish by L2 learners and heritage speakers.

What you will be asked to do in the study: Following a brief biographical questionnaire and proficiency exam, you will be asked to read sentences containing target words and then give your judgments of the grammaticality or ungrammaticality of those sentences. After, you will watch several short video clips and again give your judgments based on the context of the video. This is a written test (multiple choice) and the videos you will see are to build context within the experiment.

Time required: 1 hour

Risks and Benefits: Benefits to the researcher include a better understanding of how learners of a second language learn/acquire linguistic elements. The participant, in turn, may be able to hone his or her language skills while engaged in the experiment. There are no anticipated risks to participating.

Confidentiality: Your identity will be kept confidential to the extent provided by law by assigning your information a code number, thus maintaining anonymity.

Voluntary participation: Your participation in this study is completely voluntary. There is no penalty for not participating.

Right to withdraw from the study: You have the right to withdraw from the study at anytime.
