PPI Overview

PPI V3.0

The Primary Prevention Initiative (PPI) was established by Dr. Dreyzehner of the Tennessee Department of Health (TDH) in 2012.

The goal of the initiative is to focus the Department's energy on primary prevention efforts, which is supportive of implementing interventions before there is evidence of a disease or injury. The intent of the initiative is to reduce or eliminate causative risk factors (risk reduction).

The intent is for all TDH employees to engage in primary prevention efforts within their local community.  Topics to choose from include the following:

  • Hospital Associated Infections
  • Immunizations
  • Infant Mortality
  • Obesity
  • Occupational Injuries/Fatalities
  • Substance Use and Abuse
  • Suicide Prevention
  • Teen Pregnancy
  • Tobacco

Additional Topics may be included.

There are so many things you could choose to work on but time and resources are limited. Prioritize your efforts based on the specific needs in your community. These needs (and therefore projects) will likely vary across the state.

The purpose of this survey is to collect information on your efforts. Activities for the PPI should be reported continuously throughout the year as they are completed.

We appreciate and thank you for reporting your efforts!
