Probes and Tips - January 2010 - Add Your Voice to the ECHO: Reach out to new programs

The National Center for Hearing Assessment and Management

This newsletter provides TIPS to enhance your OAE screening and follow-up practices and PROBES about current activities so we can learn from one another's successes and challenges. Check out our website for more helpful resources: www.infanthearing.org/earlychildhood

Here are several ways you can help these newcomers:

1) Contact your Head Start State Collaboration Office or your Head Start Association to identify where the new programs are and to obtain contact information.

2)
Phone or email to offer your assistance regarding hearing screening.

3) Share the website information at kidshearing.org

4) Review the most important elements in providing quality hearing screening to young children.  This includes:

   a) Involving a local pediatric audiologist consultant (assistance may be available through the state Early Hearing and Detection program.)
   b) Selecting appropriate OAE equipment with help from the audiologist.
   c) Receiving training in OAE screening and follow-up practices.
   d) Following an appropriate screening and follow-up protocol, documenting outcomes, and tracking children who need further screening or evaluation.
   e) Monitoring screening program quality.

Keep in mind, resources for each of the above elements are found at kidshearing.org.
