Tip of the Month

Remember to Rescreen Children after Middle Ear Consultation

Did you know that health care providers (HCPs) rarely have OAE screening equipment? Therefore, whenever a child has been referred to a health care provider for a middle ear consultation, you must ALWAYS rescreen!  The hearing screening process has not been completed until...

     a) the child passes an OAE screen or rescreen

                             or

     b) the child has been evaluated by an audiologist and you have received the results

One of the most common mistakes screeners make is to neglect to do an OAE Rescreen after the child has completed a middle ear evaluation (usually done by a health care provider). Fluid or blockage may have been the reason the child did not pass the first two OAE screenings. Once middle ear is clear, as verified by the HCP,  the  OAE rescreen will be able to check INNER ear functioning.

If a child does not pass the OAE Rescreen, then the next step is an immediate referral to an audiologist for a complete diagnostic evaluation.   Remember, most HCPs do not conduct OAE screening.  This is why YOU must follow-up every referral with an OAE Rescreen.  REMIND YOUR SCREENERS OF THIS IMPORTANT STEP!
