Tip of the Month

Supporting Parent Follow-up

When a child does not pass the OAE screening and needs to see a health care provider or audiologist, getting some parents to follow through in a timely way can be challenging.   Steps may include making the appointment, reminding the parent about the appointment, and obtaining the results.

Please select one of the following images.
Making the appointment.   You can assist parents directly in making an appointment with the health care provider or audiologist.  Let the family know that you have the appointment on your calendar and that you'll be asking about the results.  Ask if there are any barriers that would potentially interfere with the family completing the appointment and help find solutions in advance.

Reminding families about the upcoming appointment.  Contact families the day before an appointment as a reminder.  Make sure you provide families with a written report of the OAE outcomes and what you want the health care provider or audiologist to do.  Send a copy of the OAE outcomes directly to the health care provider or audiologist.

Obtaining the results. Contact the family the day after the appointment to find out the results of the referral and obtain the results directly from the provider or audiologist as well.   Clarify and schedule the next step needed in the diagnostic process.
