Study Title: The Effects of Music

Department and Institution: Psychology Department, Michigan State University
1. PURPOSE OF RESEARCH:
You are being asked to participate in a psychological study. The purpose of this study is to see if listening to certain kinds of music provides to be a distraction while trying to carry out a task that requires critical thinking.
Your participation in this study will take about 5 minutes
If you are under 18, you cannot be in this study as some lyrics may be explicit.
2. WHAT YOU WILL DO:
You will be required to carry out three sets of math problems, twice while listening to selected music and a third time without background music and noise.
3. POTENTIAL BENEFITS:
The study will allow you to challenge yourself while helping further psychological research.
4. POTENTIAL RISKS:
The music provided may contain profanity or explicit lyrics which may prove to be offensive. Volume levels can also provide a risk if they are too loud.
5. PRIVACY AND CONFIDENTIALITY:
The data for this project are anonymous and confidential.
The answers you provide cannot be linked to your name by the researchers or anyone else.
6. YOUR RIGHT TO PARTICIPATE OR SAY NO:
If you do not want to participate in the study, please notify the researcher. There are no repercussions and you have every right to decline taking the study. If you do choose to participate in the study, please try and carry out the task to the best of your ability.
7. COMPENSATION FOR BEING IN THE STUDY:
There will be no monetary compensation for being in the study.
