The Eugene Washington PCORI Engagement Awards, named in honor of the first chair of PCORI’s Board of Governors, encourage active integration of patients, caregivers, clinicians, and other healthcare stakeholders  as integral members of the research process. The following questions will help you better understand if this funding opportunity is right for you and/or your team. 1. Are you applying on behalf of an organization or institution?
2. Is this project part of a thesis, dissertation or capstone research?
3. Is your organization one of the following: 1) A private sector research organization (including non-profit or for-profit organizations); 2) A public sector research organization (including universities or college hospitals or healthcare systems, laboratories or manufacturers, units of state or local government)?
4. Are you a US based organization?
5. For International organizations only: does your project clearly demonstrate the benefits of their research to the US healthcare system, US residents, and US patient-centered research?
6. Will your project exceed 2 years in duration?
7. Will your project's budget amount to over $250,000?
8. Does your project address a topic in healthcare?
9. Does your research question focus on comparing the costs of healthcare options?
10. Does your project build knowledge about PCOR, increase capacity for engaging in PCOR, or support dissemination and implementation of PCOR evidence?
11. Will this funding go towards to the development of an application, technology or device?
We are sorry, but the PCORI Engagement Awards may not be a good fit for your research idea. PCORI Engagement Awards are for a maximum of $250,000 over the course of a maximum of 2 years. Unfortunately, it appears that the PCORI Engagement Awards funding opportunity is not a good fit for your project. We encourage you to explore the Pipeline to Proposal funding opportunity. The majority of this funding is intended to benefit individuals or groups who are not usual candidates for research funding. These dollars are targeted to those individuals and groups with critically important ideas who may not have other opportunities for research funding. Any individual or group of patients, stakeholders, or researchers that meets the eligibility requirements and has research ideas that align with the goals of the Pipeline to Proposal Tier I Awards is welcome to apply.
Unfortunately, it appears that the PCORI Engagement Awards funding opportunity is not a good fit for your project. Individuals may not apply for funding through the Engagement Awards. We accept applications only from any private and/or public sector organization, including nonprofit and for-profit organizations; research organizations, universities, colleges, hospitals, laboratories, and healthcare systems; and units of state, local, and federal governments. All US applicant organizations must be recognized by the Internal Revenue Service.

Foreign organizations and nondomestic components of organizations based in the United States are welcome to apply; however, their application should clearly demonstrate the benefits of their research to the US healthcare system, US residents, and US patient-centered research.

However, PCORI does issue funding for the development of innovative mechanisms that increase access for patients, researchers, and other stakeholders to partner with each other to conduct patient-centered outcomes research (PCOR.) Funding for these products are through the PCORI Matchmaking App Challenge. We encourage you to subscribe to PCORI ealerts in order to stay informed of upcoming funding opportunities in this area.
