Failing to develop objectives and action plans within the context of strategic impact dooms the operations segment from the get-go. Effectiveness of daily operations, processes, and procedures depends on strong operational foresight, leadership, planning, and management to ensure that strategies are not only developed, but are expertly implemented--all while taking into account how these operational processes will impact the organization holistically.

Former MIT Sloan School of Management Professor E. H. Schein defined corporate culture as: "The set of shared, taken-for-granted implicit assumptions that a group holds and that determines how it perceives, thinks about, and reacts to its various environments." Many researchers have proven that a strong, well-defined, and well-executed corporate culture directly-and positively-affects economic performance. In today's environment, where so many employees value lifestyle over salary and benefits, an authentic corporate culture becomes a significant factor in attracting top talent. Organizations with well-defined values and goals infused in daily operations will succeed, and those that instill a culture of trust and align strategic decisions with corporate values will outperform competitors. Companies that devote time, energy, and resources to culture management can gain additional market share-just by focusing on this one, incredibly important business function.

Business Trajectory

Business trajectory is a term used to describe the progression of your organization. Trajectory can be influenced by your leadership team, vision, strategic growth plans, historical growth, economic conditions, and more. Based on the way businesses - or their products or services - are positioned and managed, a path is forged. Sometimes the trajectory is one of monumental success, sometimes it's one of steady, incremental success, and sometimes, sadly, it's one of catastrophe.

Business trajectory can be a difficult thing to correct, especially if it's on a downward spiral. And the longer it's been on that trajectory, the more difficulty there is in correcting momentum. Business trajectory is something that shouldn't be ignored, and should be reassessed holistically on a regular basis. So this is your call to arms: Do your plans and strategies make sense in the context of historical growth and current economic conditions? Are your revenue trajectories in line with your expense trajectories? After asking yourself these and other important questions while assessing your business trajectory, it's imperative to then determine whether any unsatisfactory trajectory would best be corrected through incremental change or a drastic redirection-identifying which plan of action is needed is essential to business continuity and profitability.
