Browser Plugin Study - Recruiting

This task is part of a research study conducted by Dr. Norman Sadeh at Carnegie Mellon University, Dr. Joel Reidenberg at Fordham University, and Dr. Pedro Leon at Stanford University and is funded by the National Science Foundation.

The purpose of the research is to build a browser plugin that effectively communicates websites’ privacy practices and available privacy choices to Internet users.

Procedures
This screening survey includes a number of multiple-choice and open-ended questions about your demographics as well as Internet usage. It will take approximately 5 minutes to complete. You will also be asked to provide an email address so that we can contact you if you are selected to participate in the research study. Your participation is voluntary and all data collected through this questionnaire will be stored securely and only be used for research purposes and by authorized researchers.

Participant Requirements
Participation in this study is limited to individuals living in the US and at least 18 years old.

Risks
The risks and discomfort associated with participation in this study are no greater than those ordinarily encountered in daily life or during other online activities and include boredom and fatigue. We will take a number of measures to protect your responses: (1) all the collected survey data will be stored securely; 2) all the collected data will only be accessed by authorized researchers.

Benefits
There may be no personal benefit from your participation in the study but the knowledge received may be of value to humanity.

Compensation & Costs
There is no compensation for participating in this screening survey, but if you are selected to participate in the study, there will be $30 as compensation for participation in the research study. There will be no cost to you if you participate in this screening survey and the research study.

Confidentiality
By participating in the study, you understand and agree that Carnegie Mellon may be required to disclose your consent form, data and other personally identifiable information as required by law, regulation, subpoena or court order. Otherwise, your confidentiality will be maintained in the following manner: Your data and consent form will be securely stored and will not be disclosed to third parties. By participating, you understand and agree that the data and information gathered during this study may be used by Carnegie Mellon and published and/or disclosed by Carnegie Mellon to others outside of Carnegie Mellon. However, your name, address, contact information and other direct personal identifiers will not be mentioned in any such publication or dissemination of the research data and/or results by Carnegie Mellon.
In case you are selected to participate in the research study, the researchers will further take the following steps to protect your identities: (1) you will be assigned a participant ID (PID) and we use this PID to identify you for this study; 2) the collected data and consent forms will be kept separated and stored securely; 3) all the collected data will only be accessed by authorized researchers.
