Brussels is entering the final stage of drafting the General Data Protection Regulation (‘GDPR’). The Regulation will transform the regulation of all personal data processing within Europe. It is now possible to predict the likely outcome of some parts of the Regulation, whilst others are still up for grabs – however the impact of the new Regulation is so large that preparations have to start now.

In this 2 hour practical workshop, Simon McDougall, Managing Director at Promontory Financial Group, will provide you with an update on the progress of the GDPR and what it means to you. He will be joined by John Bowman, former head of EU and international data protection policy at the Ministry of Justice. At the MoJ John led the UK delegation to the Council of the European Union’s data-protection expert working group (DAPIX) and was the UK government’s lead negotiator on the GDPR. Simon will also be joined by Suzanne Rodway, Group Head of Privacy at RBS, who will comment on what the GDPR means for firms in practice.

The workshop will cover the following areas:

Overview of the GDPR

  • What the GDPR is and who it applies to
  • Timescale for when the GDPR will come into force
  • How the new law will differ from the DPA 1998

What to do now

  • Managing the uncertainty around the final GDPR text
  • Identifying what needs to be started now, and what can wait for the Regulation to be finalised
  • Likely stakeholders and sponsors within your business

You can attend the roundtable workshop for just £129 + VAT (or £99 + VAT if you have a subscription to Learn, Develop, Connect – Practical Law’s online learning solution at legalpd.com)
