Introduction

Thank you for your interest in applying for a student instructor position with the CalArts Community Arts Partnership (CAP). CAP provides free, in-school and after-school arts instruction to youth, ages 6-18, at public schools, community centers and social service agencies across Los Angeles. If you become a student instructor with CAP, you will be working with CalArts faculty, alumni and other student instructors to teach CAP youth participants how to create original works of art and how to experiment with prevailing conventions of artistic expression.  To begin the application process, please complete this online job application.

Student Instructor Job Description

A CalArts Student Instructor (CSI) for the CAP program works with CalArts faculty and CAP staff to provide free arts instruction to young people, ages 6-18, in Los Angeles County.  CSIs are assigned to a specific CAP program located at one of CAP’s partner sites—either a public school or community center in the area.  CSIs report directly to the CAP faculty or lead instructor assigned to their program, and the CAP program coordinator in the CAP office.  CSI job responsibilities include:

  • Teaching their artform and sharing their expertise with CAP youth participants
  • Developing weekly lesson plans in collaboration with CalArts faculty or lead instructors
  • Assessing participants’ achievement and skill levels
  • Creating a safe learning environment that invites critical and constructive dialogue, and an exchange of opinions
  • Taking daily attendance and logging attendance in CAP’s database
  • Maintaining a safe environment in class for students
  • Accompanying CAP participants on field trips
  • Helping organize culminating events, exhibitions and readings
  • Assisting with evaluation of CAP Programs
  • Attending all mandatory orientation & training sessions
  • Working with the CAP office in the creation of all publicity materials 

Student Instructor Employment Eligibility

To be eligible for a student instructor position with CAP you must:

  • Be currently enrolled at CalArts and available to teach during the entire 2015-16 academic year.  
  • Be in good standing in your School at CalArts.
  • Successfully complete a background check (Live Scan Fingerprinting), TB Test, and reference check.
  • Attend one or more required training sessions.

Student Instructor Selection Process

Based on the information provided in this application, the best qualified applicants will be invited for an interview with a CalArts faculty member or CAP Program Coordinator. Depending upon the number of applications received, the selection process may consist of an initial application screening, an interview, portfolio submission, or any combination listed. All applicants meeting the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed advancement through any subsequent phase of the interview process.  

After the interview is complete, you will be notified if you have been preliminarily selected as a potential candidate for the student instructor position.  All potential candidates, new hires and employees considered for a student instructor position will be subject to Live Scan Fingerprinting, TB Test, and reference check before a contingent job offer is made.  

Upon successful completion of the background, TB, and reference checks, CAP will offer you the position and provide a contract to you for employment.  The contract will include your pay rate and start date, and a date that you are expected to inform CAP of your decision on taking the position.  Once you accept the offer, you will be required to attend a mandatory CSI orientation session.

Special Note to International Students

International students should check in with the Office of International Students and Programs at CalArts to gain advisement on employment eligibiity procedures.  All employment eligibility procedures for International Students must be followed prior to accepting an offer of employment with CAP.  Please be advised that a Social Security Number is required prior to commencing employment with CAP.  As securing a Social Security Number and other employment eligiblity documents may take 3-8 weeks, it is necessary to begin the process of securing these documents as soon as possible.
