In-sessional Academic English Support Provision

Section 1: Consent and Participation Group Selection

The study is being done as part of a doctoral research project on the 'effectiveness of in-sessional academic English programmes offered at British universities ' in Centre for Applied Linguistics, University of Warwick. The study has received ethical approval.

This study seeks to explore the effectiveness of academic English programmes at British universities by investigating the nature of current practices and surveying the perceptions of students, academic lecturers, academic English tutors, and course managers. Participants and their institution's name will remain totally anonymous during and after the project and will not be included in any forms of publication.

The analysis of the questionnaire data will be written up for a PhD thesis and a number of papers on the topic.

Academic English in this study means any aspects of language, such as knowledge, skills and performance, related to the academic context. These can include, knowledge of formal appropriate academic English and discipline specific language, as well as study skills such as essay, report and dissertation writing including creating a text structure, developing an argument, integrating the literature, synthesising from multiple sources and expressing a personal voice while following academic standards.
