This has been an exciting year for the Canadian Pest Management Association as we continue to support the interests of our membership and the Structural Pest Management industry. We continue to maintain and grow our relationship with the Pest Management Regulatory Agency. Every year we are meeting with the PMRA in the fall and this has proven to be very successful. This year, the focus of our discussion was on the label change to Aluminum/Magnesium Phosphide and Phosphine gas. Professionalism is a key theme within our industry and every year at our Pest Management Canada we offer excellent training seminars. This year our conference will be held in Halifax, Nova Scotia in April and I hope to see all of you there! Our regular newsletters provide key information on industry developments including changes to legislation and developments in pest management practices. This year, our website will be undergoing some significant improvements which will assist with providing this essential information. We will also continue to promote the professionalism of our industry to the public and media. The CPMA will continue to work closely with the Provincial Associations and the National Pest Management Association; through supporting each other’s initiatives we strengthen the prospects for our industry. I still do math and dream in Portuguese! Sandy Costa is an Ontario licensed pest control professional with GreenLeaf Pest Control and the past president of SPMAO. During her tenure at SPMAO, she was responsible for increasing educational opportunities, launching an e-newsletter, and developing relationships with the MOE, PMRA, Toronto Public Health and other community groups. Before starting her career in the pest control industry, Sandy spent over a decade working in marketing and training, with a focus on customer outreach, education and growth. Sandy applied her previous experience to her new role in pest management and, as bed bug issues were presenting challenges across Canada, Sandy looked for innovative ways to assist her team in bed bug management. Sandy is committed to her continued professional growth within the industry. She attends seminars in Canadian and US pest management symposiums, which give her the opportunity to learn her trade from the some of the best speakers and educators in the pest control industry. Elle est également la présidente sortante de la SPMAO (association provinciale). Durant son mandat à la SPMAO, elle a réussit à accroître les occasions de formation, à créer un bulletin d’information électronique, et à développer des relations avec les fonctionnaires du ministère de l’Environnement et de l’ARLA, du bureau de santé publique de Toronto et d’autres associations communautaires. Avant d’entamer une carrière en gestion parasitaire, Sandy a passé une dizaine d’années à travailler en marketing et en formation, en mettant l’accent sur le client, l’apprentissage et la croissance. Son expérience antérieure lui a permis d’appliquer ses compétences à son nouveau poste en gestion parasitaire. Comme les problèmes de punaises de lit s’aggravaient partout au Canada, Sandy cherchait des moyens novateurs pour aider son équipe à mieux gérer les punaises de lit. C’est un honneur pour moi d’avoir été sélectionné pour le poste de président élu de l’ACGP. L’industrie a beaucoup évolué depuis le début de ma carrière en 1983. De nos jours, les défis que nous devons affronter pour protéger l’approvisionnement alimentaire après récolte, les maisons et la santé publique n’ont jamais été aussi importants. En tant que professionnels en gestion parasitaire, nous pouvons traiter chaque structure au Canada, mais nous ne participons pas à la discussion en tant que partie prenante à l’égard des décisions qui ont un effet sur notre industrie et sur notre capacité de protéger la santé publique.
