In place of of an interview, all applicants will be asked to attend a spring leadership training. Details will be sent via email closer to the application deadline.

Thanks for your interest in helping incoming UM freshman build community, explore their new backyard, and learn outdoor skills through leading a Freshman Wilderness Experience trip!

Thank you for taking the time to apply to the Freshman Wilderness Experience (FWE) leader position. Once you finish your application, you will receive a confirmation email and will hear back from the Wilderness Institute within a few business days.

Application process and Requirements of FWE leaders.
1. Must be a Sophomore, Junior, or Senior at UM in fall of 2021.
2. Must have basic outdoor skills and an interest in leading others in the outdoors (advanced skills are not required).
3. Wilderness First Responder/Wilderness First Aid/Basic First aid certificates are suggested but not required.
4. Participation in the following dates are mandatory:

April 16th: FWE leader training for all applicants
August Leader Training and FWE trips: dates TBD (FWE prep, trip, debrief/clean up)

5. If chosen to be a FWE leader, must be willing to fill out Wilderness Institute risk and health forms, which include an acknowledgement of risk form and a physical exam through Curry Health Center or an PA/physician before May 12th.
