Purpose of the Study

This research is being conducted by Marshini Chetty at the University of Maryland, College Park. The purpose of this research project is to investigate the use of zero rated services among current users to understand how free access to the internet affects users and if it provides meaningful access to online services.
Procedures

To determine if you are eligible to participate in the study you will be asked to complete the following:
  • Answer a questionnaire about yourself. The questionnaire should only take about 15 minutes to complete. You will see questions asking about things such as your access to the internet, your occupation or student status, and what type of housing you live in.

Completion of the questionnaire does not guarantee participation in the study. If you are not selected, your survey information and answers will be destroyed.
Potential Risks and
Discomforts

There will be minimal risks involved. No personal data would be collected apart from your email addresses which will be used in case further communication is necessary.

Potential Benefits This research is not designed to help you personally, but the results may help the investigator learn more about user responses to Facebook’s Free Basic platform which will help to determine if it provides meaningful access to online services and how it could impact a user’s monthly data costs.

Confidentiality

The following procedures will be followed to keep your personal information confidential in this study:
  • All data will be anonymized once collected.
  • Your name will not be included on collected data. A randomly assigned code will be assigned and placed on your responses.  Through the use of an identification key, the researchers will be able to link your participation to your identity and only the research team will have access to the identification key.
  • Data will be stored online using SurveyGizmo and Google Drive and will only be accessible by the research team.
  • If you are not selected for the study, your survey information and answers will be destroyed.

To make sure that this research is being carried out in the proper way, the University of Maryland IRB may review study records.
