Program and Candidate Information, Eligibility
Arizona Educational Foundation’s AEF™ Teacher of the Year program is the only statewide teacher recognition program that spotlights the contributions of Arizona’s public school teachers.  The AEF™ Teacher of the Year program annually honors 10 exceptionally skilled, dedicated public school teachers in grades Pre-Kindergarten through 12.

Applicants teach in a state‐accredited school, Pre-Kindergarten through grade twelve, and are planning to continue in an active teaching status. Applicants are experts in their field who guide students of all backgrounds and abilities to achieve excellence, collaborate alongside colleagues, students, and families to create a school culture of respect and success, continually focus on connecting the classroom and key stakeholders to foster a strong community at large, are leaders of innovation in and outside of the classroom, are believers in life-long learning, and are able to express themselves in an engaging and articulate way.

Applicants submit a written application that is reviewed by a panel of judges consisting of educators and business and community leaders.  Ten finalists are selected from the written applications; applicants are notified in September 2017 if selected as one of 10 finalists.  The 10 finalists are scheduled for an interview in late September or early October 2017, as part of the final selection process.  Each finalist is required to bring to their interview a 15-minute recording of themselves teaching; judges review the videos, interview candidates and hear them deliver an impromptu speech. Five of the 10 finalists are selected as Ambassadors for Excellence; one of the five Ambassadors is named the AEF™ Teacher of the Year at the annual awards luncheon in November 2017. The Teacher of the Year and four Ambassadors serve for one year as advocates for the teaching profession by making public appearances statewide, speaking to professional, business, education, civic, parent and student groups.  The remaining five finalists who are not selected as the Teacher of the Year or as an Ambassador attend the awards luncheon and are honored at that time.

Applicants must:
• Spend the majority (over 50%) of the school day in direct instruction to students;
• Be certified to teach Pre-Kindergarten - 12th Grade (or combination) in Arizona at a state-accredited public school;
• Have completed at least four (4) full years as a classroom teacher at the time the application is submitted for consideration;
• Be a full-time teacher and plan to continue in an active teaching status through 2018;
• Not have been selected in as an AEF™ Teacher of the Year, Semifinalist or, Ambassador for Excellence in the past.
