Mixed Reality Simulations PILOT

Project & Commitment Overview
ESE believes that the quality of preparation can be strengthened through the use of simulations. Specifically, we have heard from candidates about gaps in their readiness prior to entry into the classroom and we know from Sponsoring Organizations (SO) that there are experiences that are difficult to construct for preparation candidates; mixed reality simulations are an innovative mechanism to address these needs. Simulations will provide additional means and opportunities for candidates to experience the realities of the classroom in a low-risk, high-impact way. In particular, Massachusetts is interested in supporting the use of simulations in traditionally hard-to-experience areas, for instance: working with English Language Learners and students with disabilities. ESE is working with a vendor to focus on closing the gaps in readiness that teacher candidates perceive upon completion of their preparation programs and entrance to the classroom. There are two aspects to the Mixed-Reality Simulation work: (1) Piloting the simulations in initial teacher preparation programs and (2) Serving on a working group to support the development of 12-16 Massachusetts specific scenarios.
 
(1) By participating in the pilot, providers will:
  • Receive Simulation Lab equipment
  • Receive an introduction to basic principles of simulation design, best practices for session facilitation, principles of instructional design for simulation, and an understanding of the variety of programming options available (e.g., avatars, content, behavior level).
  • Receive training that will deepen technical knowledge of how to deploy virtual simulation, including addressing any concerns that may come up in the first few months of implementation. This training will focus on (a) how to facilitate the 12–16 mixed-reality simulations developed by ESE, the vendor, and a group of external stakeholders, (b) how to embed these simulations into coursework, and (c) how to leverage these simulations for formative/summative assessments.
Collaborate in Mixed-Reality Simulation Network meetings to (a) share lessons learned, best practices, and research findings; (b) give feedback to the vendor; (c) explore new areas of practice and research; and (d) develop common metrics and goals to structure innovation in implementation practices.

ESE can support 1,500 hours of simulation for up to 18 providers. Organizations may use their own funds to support additional time or candidates. Piloting organizations commit to:
  • Sustainability of the use of simulations in programs beyond the grant period (6/30/2018)
  • Embedding the simulations within key courses for initial teacher licensure candidates
  • Attend the training provided by the vendor
  • Fully participating in research conducted on the demonstrated impact of simulations, this includes sharing data (e.g., survey data) from simulation participants as well as data from individuals who did not participate (as a control)
  • (as requested) Presenting on the experience with mixed-reality simulations to group(s) of peers and allowing other interested SOs to observe simulations
  • Participating in bi-annual Network meetings
