The Professional Educator Standards Board (PESB)  has set aside funding to provide educator preparation programs an opportunity to engage in activities related to strategies and actions for improving the recruitment and retention of underrepresented populations in teacher preparation programs.  The project efforts must be in direct response to the series of reports put out by PESB that focus on developing underrepresented pathways into the teaching profession. This includes activities that focus on recruitment and increasing the cultural competence of candidates completing programs to become teachers in Washington State. Grant proposals can select from the list of  target activities provided for the purposes of this grant. The grant activities must be included as components of the preparation program’s Equity Action Plan (EAP), to be developed during the grant year. There is no set amount for grants, but awards typically range from $500-$10,000.

Grant applicants must be approved preparation programs. Programs with multiple campuses or certification routes are encourage to collaborate across routes/campuses on grant activities and EAP design and implementation.

Complete this self assessment prior to finishing the Grant Activities section of the application.

Research and experience demonstrate that collaboration around similar ideas or projects increases the effectiveness and success of the project. Consistent with these research findings, recipients of this grant will agree to participate in three state-wide professional learning community (PLC) meetings intended to aid in the development and implementation of EAPs. Travel to these meetings will be paid for by PESB and participation (of key collaborators) is required for recipients of this grant.  PLC meetings will be held on December 1, 2016, February 9, 2017, and April 19, 2017 and will include workshop, training, sharing, and collaboration components focused on developing and implementing an EAP. Future grants from this fund are likely to require the submission of an EAP for consideration.

Summary of Expectations for grant recipients:
  • Develop an Equity Action Plan (EAP) at the program level (not certification route level)
  • Attend PLC meetings on the following dates: December 1, 2016, February 9, 2017, and April 19, 2017
  • Implement or begin implementing at least two target activities from the grant as part of the EAP developed.
  • Submit required grant concluding documents (e.g., budget, final reports, EAP)
