Studio Artist Application

Welcome!

First, if you would like more details about the District Clay Center Studio Artist Program, you can click here for a description and here for floorplans of our new space.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me via email (cass@districtclaycenter.com) or by phone (202-341-8269).

Thank you for considering the new District Clay Center for studio artist space!  Our goal is to create a space at the Center that feeds your creative urges, gives you opportunities to learn from and give to other rising artists, and continues to build the amazing and generous community that is District Clay.   In that sense, studio artists should represent the heart of District Clay - creatively ambitious, generous with your learning and eager to learn from others, and committed to maintaining the sense of community.

In return, we promise to engage with you to help you succeed.  We will schedule monthly critique sessions for all who are interested, we will come to you first for ideas of workshops, exhibits and potential resident artists.  We will provide you with an extensive library so that you can easily research new ideas and techniques.  We will provide you with the most up to date equipment in the Washington area. We will regularly bring in new speakers and presenters to fuel your imagination.  And we will promote you and your work through our website and, potentially, pending jury review, through our Gallery and special exhibitions. We will also give you the opportunity to apply to hold personal exhibitions and be represented in our Gallery.  Most importantly, we will want to hear from you what is going wrong (and right!) and how we can make the District Clay Center a better place for you and for our community.

How to do we choose someone to become a studio artist at District Clay? We have a panel of three people - myself, an arts educator and a successful artist - who will be reviewing applications.  We will try and take no more than two weeks to make a decision. To become a studio artist, the formula is pretty simple - first, we are looking for people who want to grow and expand their art; second, we want people who enjoy working in a community environment and third, we want people who will help the District Clay Center grow and succeed.

On that last point, we want people to feel this Center is their Center, to watch out for it, to become involved in how it works, to contribute to its health and well being.  That can be anything from helping to keep the Center clean and tidy to helping us develop new systems or innovative programs.  For those who are interested, we have some work/study opportunities available.

Work/Study

Studio Artists may be able to defray some of their monthly rental costs by engaging in regular work at the studio.  This may include activities such as maintaining the Center website and engaging in social media, managing student subscriptions, pugging and recycling clay, helping to load and fire kilns on a regular basis, preparing and maintaining studio glazes, and keeping common areas clean and organized.

Work/Study will require studio artists to log in their time and activities on a weekly basis.  Failure to perform a given task, or to get a substitute if necessary, may result in revocation of work/study privileges.

District Clay is presently working on rules and procedures for work/study for Studio Artists.
11. Are you potentially interested in participating in work study? *This question is required.
