Quarterly Strategic Review - workbook

Quarterly Strategic Review

Quarterly Strategic Review

Ideally, your organization has a robust Strategic Plan in place; one where all the key strategic elements have been thoroughly reviewed within the last 12 months as part of a High-Level Strategic Review.

(But don't worry if your Strategic Plan is incomplete - you will still benefit from the Quarterly Strategic Review process)

The Cadence of Strategy Execution.

I recommend executing your Strategy in a series of quarterly sprints.  You do the hard, focused work to implement your Strategic Projects every quarter, but you also need to stop on a regular basis to assess how you're doing. These review sessions are critical because they help you stay focused but flexible. One question that many clients ask is: "Why do we have to do this every quarter?" The answer is simple: "Things change."

Every quarter you will take the time to review your performance from the prior quarter and bank any lessons learned. We call this an After Action Review.

Then you'll check in with your Long-Term Strategy (3 to 5 Year Strategic Moves) and update your SWOT Analysis. Your learning and analysis of the current situation will prepare you for the final step in your Quarterly Strategic Review session: choosing your Strategic Projects for the coming quarter.

The 3 elements of the Quarterly Strategic Review:

  1.     Review strategic execution from last quarter (After Action Review)
  2.     Review Long-Term Strategy and update SWOT Analysis
  3.     Choose Strategic Projects for next quarter

Research has shown that better quality decision making occurs when people are asked to write their own ideas in isolation first. Then this written information is collated and presented to the group for discussion and debate before final decisions are made on the day.

You will have the opportunity to print out a PDF of your workbook once you have completed this exercise. Please make sure to share and discuss your document with your team prior to your Strategic Planning. Your aim is to get all the issues on the table and have everyone discussing potential solutions before you meet to make your final decisions on the planning day.
