TechAlliance Business Challenge: London Hydro Edition, Sponsored by IBM Canada

What is the competition about?
Using the IBM Bluemix platform and London Hydro’s Innovation Centre, eligible entrepreneurs have a chance to win a number of great prizes including access to IBM’s Bluemix Platform and London Hydro’s Green Button Platform containing up to 2 years of formatted customer consumption data. As well, the winning entry has the potential to be marketed to London Hydro’s diverse 150,000 customer base.

What do you need to do?
Write a proposal to create a next generation, innovative app that utilizes near real time secure, Green Button customer data to:
  • empower households or small businesses to understand their consumption patterns
  • encourage sustainable behaviour to reduce or shift energy demand to off peak times, by leveraging the province’s investment in smart meters
  • create a compelling use case for Green Button adoption across utility jurisdictions
Participants will be judged on the following criteria:
  • Customer value
  • Market penetration potential
  • Product sustainability
  • Design creativity and innovation
  • Technology - user experience, functionality, scalability
  • Business case for London Hydro
  • Effective and innovative use of IBM cloud technologies (Bluemix, Watson)
Entrants should explore the entire catalogue of Bluemix services but are especially encouraged to reach for “Next Gen” app using the advanced Watson services available at https://www.ibm.com/watson/developercloud/services-catalog.html

What's in it for you?
Four finalists selected from this application will be invited to London Hydro's Innovation Centre for a half day of training and networking on Saturday, March 25th, and then invited back for the final pitch day on Thursday, April 20th

During the Finalists' Day on Friday March 24th, finalists will receive: 
  • Advanced training on IBM Bluemix, Green Button app and data, and the energy industry
  • Networking and coaching from IBM and London Hydro experts (tech + business), and leadership team
  • Exclusive access to London Hydro's customer data
  • 4 months of IBM Bluemix credits valued at $40,000
All finalists will be invited back to submit a written proposal and to pitch their app based solution on Thursday April 20th. The winner will receive:
  • Continued access to London Hydro's Innovation Centre, customer data, and mentorship
  • The opportunity to pilot their project with London Hydro's diverse 150,000 customers
  •  12 months of IBM Bluemix credits valued at $120,000 (total value)
Timeline:
Applications due: Monday, March 20th, 11:00 am
Finalists announced: Tuesday, March 21st, 5 pm
Finalists' Day: Friday, March 24th, 10:00 am - 3:00 pm
Written proposal due: Wednesday, April 19th, 11:00 am
Final Competition: Thursday April 20th, 11:30 am - 3:00 pm
