EPIC Field Engagement Application: Calibration Training Workshop Series

Overview

Applications Due July 30th!

OVERVIEW
In the Candidate Assessment of Performance (CAP), teacher candidates must demonstrate proficiency in Six Essential Elements that embody performance across the Professional Standards for Teachers. The elements are the high-priority skills that new teachers need to be effective on Day 1. In order to become proficient in these practices, candidates need comprehensive preparation, modeling, and feedback aligned to these practices from their teacher educators – from ED101 to student teaching to employment.

Developing a common understanding of high-quality practice and feedback relevant to these essential elements is therefore critical for teacher educators to prepare teacher candidates and to meet rigorous expectations for readiness.

Starting this Fall, ESE is facilitating a Calibration Training Workshop Series focused on four of the six essential elements: Well-Structured Lessons, High Expectations, Meeting Diverse Needs, and Safe Learning Environment. Teams of teacher educators will use video, real-time data analysis, and guided discussion to develop a shared understanding of proficient practice and common expectations for high-quality feedback.

Intended Participants: Teacher Educators, including
  • Educator Preparation faculty, Arts & Sciences faculty, district faculty, CAP supervisors, and practitioners/educators with supervisory or evaluative responsibilities

Teams of teacher educators will:
  • Come to agreement around what high quality practice looks like, resulting in more consistent and rigorous expectations for candidate performance;
  • Collectively identify look-for's associated with proficient practice in four essential elements; and
  • Practice drafting evidence-based, actionable feedback designed to reinforce high expectations for performance.
Participants will receive:
  • New training resources, including train-the-trainer materials for subsequent professional development with teacher educators and teacher candidates; and
  • Progress monitoring and data tools to evaluate the impact of this calibration training.
ELIGIBILITY: Sponsoring Organizations and Districts
ESE is able to support up to twenty SO and SO/district teams. SOs may apply to participate in the Calibration Training Workshop Series as a single SO or as an SO/district partnership. (Districts must have an SO partner in order to participate.)
  • SO Teams: Participating SO teams may range from 4-20 individuals and include faculty, CAP supervisors, and other teacher educators. Team composition may shift from semester to semester.
  • SO/District Partnership Teams: SO/district partnership teams may range from 6-25 individuals and include SO faculty, Program Supervisors, Supervising Practitioners, mentor teachers, teachers interested in becoming SPs, school principals, or other school staff w/ evaluative responsibilities. Team composition may shift from semester to semester.

COMMITMENT & EXPECTATIONS
The series includes four workshops (two per semester). Sponsoring Organizations (SOs) and SO/district teams must attend all four workshops. Workshop content is aligned to the CAP observation calendar and designed to build expertise in each of the four focus elements over time. To make attendance easier, each workshop will be offered twice in different locations.
