2017 Indonesia Stewards Fellowship Application

Program Overview

THE STEWARDS FELLOWSHIP

Please note that all applications must be completed and submitted no later than August 18, 2017. We are currently working to finalize dates for the postponed but forthcoming Stewards Fellowship Conference. We expect to host the event in October or November of this year. Once finalized, the dates will be shared on our website and with all those who have submitted their information via the application. Thank you for your patience, time, and interest in our program.

Join a growing global network of university faculty who serve as leaders of health security education and stewardship. This is an opportunity to work with like-minded international educators and experts toward a goal of developing and implementing robust health security curriculum at your home institution, and to more broadly raise awareness and impact your community of health stakeholders. A total of up to 12 Fellowships will be awarded.
 
The 2017 Health Security Stewards Fellowship is jointly organized by Health Security Partners (HSP), the Indonesian Academy of Sciences (AIPI), and the Indonesian One Health University Network (INDOHUN). This fellowship educates and mentors university faculty to provide health security training as part of medical, veterinary, public health, and life sciences curriculum, as well as through workshops and seminars to engage the wider community of academic and government stakeholders.
 
Specifically, Fellows who complete this program will be able to build into curricula, relevant health security topics including:
  1. International frameworks such as the World Health Organization (WHO) International Health Regulations (IHR), the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) Performance of Veterinary Services (PVS), Biological & Toxins Weapons Convention (BTWC), Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and others;
  2. Emerging issues and solutions such as Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR), using a One Health approach to tackle emerging zoonotic infections, responding to public health emergencies of international concern (PHEIC), the importance of health systems strengthening, Food safety and security, and Gender and health security;
  3. Issues in Biological Safety and Security including Dual use research of concern, Codes of responsibility, and Bioethics; and
  4. Needs for evidence-based policies, national and international collaboration, science diplomacy and many others.
The Fellowship begins with an intensive weeklong in-person training institute, scheduled to take place in Jogja, Indonesia at a to be determined date. The training will be followed by a year of mentoring via HSP’s online platform, as Fellows develop and rollout relevant curricula, workshop and seminars. A group of subject matter experts and thought leaders from the United States, Indonesia and regional South East Asia, as well as Indonesian alumni (2015 Fellows), will serve as trainers and mentors for this program. 

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS
  • A citizen of, and residing within Indonesia;
  • Full-time or adjunct faculty in the following disciplines: medicine, veterinary medicine, life sciences, public health, international relations, science & technology, and global health and development;
  • Working proficiency in the English language;
  • Application materials outlining your interest in health security and your goals for the fellowship, with a letter of support from the Dean or responsible official of your university; and
  • Commitment to participate in all aspects of the program below:
    • One week Stewards Fellowship Training Institute in Indonesia;
    • Yearlong virtual mentoring by experts;
    • Development and delivery of health security curriculum at home institution;
    • Workshops and seminars to engage the wider community of health stakeholders; and
    • Completing required activities, assessments, and evaluations of the program.
CRITERIA FOR SELECTION
  • Interest in health security issues;
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement effective curricula and educational tools;
  • Leadership capacity to share knowledge with stakeholders in country and in the region;
  • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse multi-disciplinary teams
  • Institutional commitment to Fellow’s participation in the program.

Health Security Partners (HSP): is a nonprofit organization based in Washington DC, USA that is dedicated to building local sustainable capacity to improve health security around the world. Our global network of collaborators allows us to work closely with in-country partners to develop and deliver programs that advance individuals’ careers, institutions’ capacities, and societies’ ability to prevent, detect and respond to biological threats. Within this framework, we provide a suite of fellowship programs to strengthen the medical, veterinary and public health workforce and institutions.
 
Akademi Ilmu Pengetahuan Indonesia (AIPI): is an independent body of scientists based in Jakarta, Indonesia working to encourage the development of scientific knowledge and excellence. We accomplish this by holding scientific conferences, hosting policy discussion forums, submitting scientific publications, engaging young Indonesian scientists, and by establishing and maintaining national and international relationships.
 
The Indonesia One Health University Network (INDOHUN): is an academic member network based in Jakarta, Indonesia. We serve as a platform for leading members of the academic community, scientists, government officials, and other industry professionals from Indonesia that provides support to those dealing with issues of regional and global concern. Specifically, we aim to implement the One Health concept across the country and as part of an effort to improve the health of people, animals and the ecosystem. Our overarching goal is to support the expansion of One Health education within the Indonesian curriculum.
