Thinking During Flying

Primary Investigator: Jennifer Cowley
Faculty Advisor: Doug Gillan

INFORMATION
You are invited to participate in a confidential research study if you are at least 18 years of age and hold a current pilot license/certificate for fixed-winged aircraft. The purpose of this study is to investigate a pilot's stream of conscious thought during flight. In section I of this four-sectioned survey, you will be asked to personally define what on-task (flight-related) and off-task thinking (flight-unrelated) are. In section II, we would like to know during what phases of flight you believe your fellow pilots are most likely to experience on-task thinking.  Section III allows you the opportunity to share your personal opinions and/or experiences about off-task thinking.  Finally, section IV asks for background information about your own flight expertise.  All participants who complete every question of this survey will be entered into a drawing for an Apple iPod; thus, the last question of this survey asks for contact information in the event that you win the drawing.  Partially completed surveys will be excluded from the drawing and it is not possible to complete more than one survey to improve your odds of winning.

RISKS
Since this survey asks for your personal experiences with off-tasking thinking, we encourage you to complete this survey in a private area and to prevent others from accessing your survey responses if you need to leave the computer before submitting your answers.

CONFIDENTIALITY
The information in the study records will be kept strictly confidential and you are asked not to provide your name or other identifying information. The online survey site used for this survey will not track or link your IP or email address to your answers. Data will be stored securely and will be made available only to persons conducting the study unless you specifically give permission in writing to do otherwise. No reference will be made in oral or written reports that could link your participation to this study. However, if you wish to be entered into the iPod raffle, we do ask that you provide some form of contact information in the last question so that we can get in touch with you should you win the Apple iPod raffle.  You are welcome to not answer this question or you can provide a phone number or email address. In order to maintain the confidentiality of your responses, the results of this question are not connected to the rest of your responses.
