STEM to STEAM: A Maker Day for Educators
 
Southeast Service Cooperative is hosting a Maker Day for Educators to provide engaging opportunities to learn about STEAM and place art and design in the center of STEM. The day will include an interactive opening keynote – a Crash Course on Design Thinking. Learning labs will be provided as break-outs (45 minute) and intensives (90 minute). Learning lab proposals will be open to regional organizations (K-12 schools, colleges/universities, non-profit art organizations, STEM industries) and individuals (artists, educators, professionals, hobbyists). Learning lab facilitators will share their expertise and engage participants in learning about STEAM, technical prototyping skills, creative problem-solving and best practices. Learning labs may include:
 
·         Equipment demonstrations
·         Maker Show and Tell
·         Best Practices for Maker Spaces
·         STEM/STEAM classroom implementation
·         Hands-on art and design sessions
·         Prototyping 101
·         Hand tools and power tools tutorials
·         Successful community collaborations

Maker Day Objectives: 
1) Support teachers in exploring art and design within STEM
2) Bring together tech enthusiasts, crafters, educators, tinkerers, hobbyists, engineers, science gurus, artists, and industry experts
3) Explore best practices for STEAM education and managing maker spaces
4) Model/experience play as learning for adults
5) Connect with art organizations and STEAM resources
