8. Which residencies are you interested in bringing to your school?

• Edie Baran- Drama and Science: A Sensory Approach to the Study of Earth and Life Science Systems (Students create living, moving sculptures demonstrating transformation and cause-and-effect of Earth and/or Life Science Systems. Grades 1-6)
• Edie Baran- Acting Out the Words: Enhancing Literacy through Story Theater (Students bring stories to life by acting them out using their imaginations, bodies and voices focusing on literacy, drama and social skills. Grades preK -2)
• Pacal Bayley- Common Denominators: The Connection Between Math and Popular Music (Popular music is catchy and also hightly mathematical. Students will analyze mathematical patterns and unit fractions by listening to their favorite music and creating original rhythms. Grades 4-5)
• Fabu Carter- Emotional Wellness Through Poetry (Using a selected literary work as a basis to examine feelings, students will use poetry as a tool for positive self-identity and to promote emotional wellness. Grades 3-6)
• Danielle Dresden- Time Travel Through History with Theater (Dramatizing key moments in history provides students with a captivating way to explore course content. Students will hone writing and acting skills as they develop and perform scenes about the individuals and issues from a historical period. Grades 5-8)
• Leslie Iwai - From Trash to Treasure: Creating Imaginative Sculptures from Found and Recycled Materials (The discarded and overlooked items that fill our world are rich with potential. Using items from the recycling bin and the thrift store, students will go through a design process of imagining, sketching and brainstorming to create collaborative sculptures and stories while inspiring new ways of imagining how we inhabit our neighborhood and world! Grades 2-6)
• Jamie Kember-Celebrating Diversity Through the Origins of Rock and Roll (Rock and Roll music was born out of America’s rich diversity. While learning about the original rock and rollers of the 1950s and the music and cultures that influenced them, your students will recognize their diversity as an asset to our society. Grades 7-12)
• Terry Kerr - Walking In Another’s Shoes: Using The Actor’s Tools To Create Characters And Understand Others (Students will strengthen empathy as they embody characters who are not like themselves. Using the actor’s tools, students will think deeply about the unseen elements of character and improvise short scenes using characters of their own creation or those found in a work being used in the classroom. Grades 2-8)
• Terry Kerr - What Happens Next: Hypothesis and Storytelling in Science and Theater ( In this innovative exploration of the intersection between science and theatre, students think like a scientist as they learn a key process of the scientific method, forming a hypothesis. They communicate what they have learned by performing original pieces for one another, other classrooms or for parents. Grades 3-6)
• Beth Kiser- Imagination Vacation: Destressing Writing and the Classroom with Mindful Music (Students will learn music listening strategies to calm the body, focus the mind and provide a framework for successful writing. Mindfulness activities inspire students’ confidence and creativity while providing a solid structure to guide writing of  narratives, prose and poetry. Grades 3-8)
• Jessica Lanius/Clare Hayden-Theatre LILA Story Project (In this theatre-based story telling residency, students will be immersed in theatre games, physical improvisations and writing exercises that help build skills in collaboration, leadership, and communication. The workshop introduces students to an alternative form of storytelling, to build confidence and foster compassion. The themes of the stories can be tailored to the needs of the classroom. Grades 8-12)
• Madison Youth Choirs -Building Community and Cultural Appreciation through Singing (In this residency, students explore the authentic connections between music and culture. The students will sing songs from different cultures, using music as a lens to discover the world and explore the historical context and heart of the music. Grades 3-5)
• Amy Mietzel- Animation Locomotion: The Art of Sequencing (The combination of visual arts and kinesthetic movement provides an exciting and memorable way for students to think about and learn sequencing in writing. This residency is the perfect avenue to explore descriptive details and clear event sequences in writing of texts in the form of flip-books. Grades 2-5)
• Donna Peckett - The Rhythms of History: Exploring Cultural Heritage through Movement (Through combining rhythm and movement with words and sounds, students create and share their collaborative-history vignettes, uncovering their cultural ancestry and immigrations to America. Students learn basic movement, rhythm, voice projection and collaborative problem solving through structured learning activities and improvisation. Grades 3-6)
• Olivia Rivard-Choreographing Language:Writing Dance (The written word and dance are languages that serve as communication as well as artistic exploration and creation. In this residency, students choreograph and perform their own dances using their writing as inspiration for and reflection on their dances. Grades 3-5)
• Bobbette Rose-Visualizing History: Getting Graphic with the Past (History gets a fresh look as students take an historical event or period to illustrate and create a graphic novel together. Students learn to identify main characters and build a story sequence. This residency will augment any period you are teaching and give the students a way to deepen their understanding of the events. Grades 6-8)
• Dr. J. Adam Shelton - What's Opera, Doc? (This residency explores the inner workings of opera, building students’ reading comprehension and writing skills while preparing them to see a live operatic performance. Students not only learn and sing an actual song from a show, but also  build their own unique synopsis, review, and conceptualization of the show in their Opera Journals. Grades 1-8)
• Kelly Parks Snider-Developing Media Literacy and Leadership Through Art (Students will develop the necessary tools to think more critically, examining mass media and advertising influences on their lives. Students will be immersed in a variety of writing and visual arts experiences designed to inspire self-reflection and social change, culminating in their own art exhibition. Grades 5-8)
• Rebecca Stanley- The Missing Piece: Geometry through Quilting (Shape your students’ appreciation of geometry through its aesthetic application in design of the traditional art and craft of quilt piecing. Students manipulate paper and fabric to discover relationships between geometry, design, and construction, using concepts like angles, symmetry, congruence, concavity, and order of operations. Grades 5-8)
• Peggy Morgan Strimple-Wild Things: Move 'n Groove Inside our World Habitats (In this residency students bring Earth’s habitats to life by animating the animals interacting in their home surroundings and unique environments. After investigating their habitats, the students demonstrate the amazing animals that co-exist using collected research, learned dance movement, creative body expression and inspirational music. Grades k-5)
