Course Application: Skills & Careers in Science Writing (Fall 2017)

Thank you for your interest in the Skills and Careers in Science Writing course, offered by Science in Society, in partnership with The Graduate School and in association with faculty from Medill School of Journalism.

Course Information: Course Credit: Offered for zero credit, graded satisfactory/unsatisfactory Cost: This course is underwritten by The Graduate School as an opportunity for professional development. Accepted Northwestern students will attend free of charge. Format: Classes run one evening per week for 10 weeks. Most weeks will include a core writing assignment/exercise, assigned readings and a guest speaker from a related profession. Students will need to bring a laptop to complete in-class writing exercises. Location: All classes take place on the Evanston campus.

Course Eligibility: This course is designed for full-time, PhD-track STEM+ graduate students at Northwestern. At this time, we are not considering applications from postdoctoral fellows or Master's degree students or PhD candidates from other institutions.
Relevant fields of study include Anthropology, Chemistry, Communication Sciences & Disorders, Computer Science, Engineering, Life Sciences, Math, Physics, and Psychology. 

 Priority will be given to students entering the 3rd or 4th year of PhD study.

The application form includes a short essay and personal statement.
Please complete and save your essays in another file format (eg MS Word). YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO SAVE A PARTIAL APPLICATION.

Topics:
  • In around 800 words, describe your research and why it matters for a general, high-school-educated audience.
  • Tell us what you hope to gain from this course. (Maximum 200 words)

Eligibility
Applicants must be full-time, PhD-track STEM+ graduate students at Northwestern. Relevant fields of study include but are not limited to Anthropology, Chemistry, Communication Sciences & Disorders, Computer Science, Engineering, Life Sciences, Math, Physics and Psychology.

Usually 3rd and 4th year PhD students (as of September 2017) make up about 70% of accepted applicants, but others may apply.
.At this time we are not considering applications from postdoctoral fellows or Master's degree students.
