Climate change is a global issue, and resource management is one of the main challenges facing everyone, to try and mitigate our impact on the climate and on the planet’s resources. Business needs to play it’s part in this, and across the UK and further afield there are many initiatives to help and encourage businesses to examine how they can operate more efficiently and reduce their emissions. Legislation is one of these tools, but this only goes so far, and more is needed to highlight the issue and get businesses to take action. Beyond legal compliance, businesses take action for many reasons. The most common, is where there is a financial incentive to do so, e.g. in the form of lower resource costs through more efficient operations. However, it is usually more complex than that, and many businesses are beginning to realise the commercial value of also being seen by their stakeholders to be playing a part in fighting climate change. Others, also feel a moral responsibility, and understand their position as key influencers and leaders within their community, be that geographic or a business sector. Staff are also increasingly expecting their employers to take action, and being involved in a carbon reduction program has proven to increase staff engagement and motivation. As a result, there are many voluntary protocols and standards worldwide, that businesses can commit to, which satisfy these motivators: reduced cost, improved PR, staff engagement, social responsibility.
