Measuring Flood Resilience in City of Charleston and Charleston County, South Carolina

The
Resilient America program of the
National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine is working with a variety of organizations in the region to better understand the impacts of flooding in your community.
We are conducting an online survey of households about flood resilience and invite you to participate.
In 2016, Resilient America collected data from a variety of community stakeholders, organizations, and residents to assess Charleston's baseline flood resilience. Examples of flood preparedness successes and opportunities for growth were identified, including:
Successes:
- Local decision makers and first responders are effective at communicating about an emergency with local residents, businesses, and other community stakeholders
- Strong grassroots efforts have developed to help respond and recover from flood events
Opportunities for growth:
- Some infrastructure systems (e.g., transportation, drainage) are vulnerable to flood events
- Addressing the needs of diverse populations and communities in the region
- Protection and management of the natural environment
This Fall 2017, Resilient America will collect additional data in Charleston County to better understand the community's experiences during recent flood event such as Hurricanes Matthew and Irma, new flood resilience related initiatives, and areas where the community has addressed challenges.
Your participation in this online household survey is an important addition to our assessment process and we thank you for taking the time to fill out the survey. We are interested in your opinions, even if you have not been personally affected by floods.Your participation in this survey is completely voluntary. You can refuse to answer any question and your answers will remain strictly confidential. We will combine your responses with responses from all of the households we survey in Charleston County. The combined results will not indicate your name or identity. They will be shared with city and county officials and with community organizations such as United Way or the American Red Cross, which may use the information to improve their flood response. Your responses will be stored securely and will only be used by authorized researchers.
