BTO Mentee Application Fall '17

Mission Statement: The purpose of Bridge to Opportunities Peer Mentorship Program is to support college students through different transitions in their college experience.  Our goal is to help students start strong, stay strong, and finish strong!

Advantages: Students who join BTO will have the opportunity to work with one of many Peer Mentors, all of whom are students and leaders at Cañada College. Mentees will meet with their assigned Mentor at least two times every month, meet with a Counselor at least twice a semester, attend at least one campus event, and various workshop and seminars. The focus of BTO is to increase retention rates and persistence while providing a positive and successful transition. In addition to receiving support from a Peer Mentor, students in BTO will also receive 1:1 counseling services in areas such as academic, career, financial, and personal counseling.

Student Learning Outcomes:
After successful completion of this program students should be knowledgeable of:
  • Various resources available on campus
  • Tutoring services and referrals (one-on-one and group)
  • Important deadlines
  • How to better communicate with professors, study and test- taking strategies, time management, and how to set attainable short- term and long-term goals
  • Various financial aid services and financial literacy
  • How to have a sense of acceptance and belonging
  • Assistance with the transfer process and different majors and careers available
  • How to promote personal development and self-efficacy
  • Student organizations and clubs
  • How to search and register for classes
Eligibility Requirements:
Students interested in participating in BTO must meet the following requirements:
  • Be a Cañada College student
  • Must be  enrolled in at least one class at Cañada College per semester
  • Must be enrolled in at least six academic units within the San Mateo Community College District
  • Must have a goal of achieving a degree, certificate, and/or transferring to a university
