Nonvisual Travel Techniques

Understanding the orientation and mobility techniques used by non-visual travelers

I’m a Ph.D research student in the School of Computing, Informatics, and Decision Systems Engineering at Arizona State University (ASU). I work as a research student in the Center for Cognitive Ubiquitous Computing (CUbiC) at ASU. I am conducting a study to learn about blind and visually impaired people’s techniques and methods of travel. This study is focused on the orientation and mobility techniques used by non-visual travelers to determine how technology can augment the visual information available to an individual who is blind or low vision.

If you (1) are at least 18 years old, (2) self-identify as blind or visually impaired, and (3) use a cane or guide dog for mobility, I am inviting your participation, which will involve completing a 15-minute online survey about your history, orientation and mobility training and techniques used during travel.

You have the right not to answer any question, and to stop participation at any time.

Your participation in this study is voluntary. If you choose not to participate or to withdraw from the study at any time, there will be no penalty.

You must be at least 18 years old to participate in this study.

Although participating in this study has no direct benefit to you personally, the information you provide on this and future surveys will be used to better inform assistive technology developers about the techniques used by non-visual travelers.

There are no major risks or discomforts to your participation. You can skip any question that you don’t feel comfortable answering.

None of the information you give us will be shared with others outside the research team. Your responses will be kept confidential. The results of this study may be used in reports, presentations, or publications but your name will not be used.

If you have any questions concerning the research study, please contact Bryan Duarte at bryan.duarte@asu.edu or Dr. Troy McDaniel at troy.mcdaniel@asu.edu.
