Memphis Challenge Junior and Senior Program

Founded in 1989 by J.R. ‘Pitt’ Hyde, The Memphis Challenge coaches talented, high achieving students of color (African American, Latino/a, Hispanic, Asian American, Native American), through leadership and professional development, preparing them to become future Memphis leaders.

The Memphis Challenge:
  • Offers leadership and professional development workshops.
  • Provides academic advisement to students and their families regarding scholarship opportunities and exposure to top colleges and universities.
  • Maintains contact throughout college life to ensure continued academic success.
  • Identifies summer internship opportunities in Memphis.
  • Assists students with career prospects after college upon their return to Memphis.
  • Offers experiential learning experiences.
 
  Requirements
 
Academic achievement, leadership abilities, and interviewing skills are the basis for selection. The following criteria are necessary for consideration:

  • Scholastic average of 3.5 or higher (Most recent report card or transcript required).
  • ACT score of at least 25 or a combined SAT score of 1500 (**applies to senior applicants only**).
  • Proven leadership skills, particularly in community service.

Completing the Application
 
This application includes questions regarding:
  • Personal Information
  • Contact Information
  • Contact Information for Parent/Guardian
  • Current High School
  • Scholastic Distinctions
  • Extracurricular Activities/Jobs 
  • Personal Statement (500 words max)
You will also be required to submit the following materials in order for your application to be considered complete: 
  • A most recent report card/transcript.
  • A letter of recommendation from a teacher, counselor, coach, mentor, or other non-related authority who can speak to your character and leadership.
  • A copy of your ACT scores (seniors only).
The application process should take no longer than 35 minutes to complete.
