10-Minute Walk Planning Grant and Technical Assistance Application

Program Description

Purpose
This funding will support local planning efforts for the 10-Minute Walk Campaign to increase access to high-quality parks. In the first round of grants 12-13 cities will receive $40,000 each to work alongside NRPA, The Trust for Public Land (TPL), and the Urban Land Institute (ULI) to develop their highest, best, and measurable commitment to the 10-Minute Walk Campaign. 

Cities selected will have access to the following benefits:

  • Ongoing technical assistance from NRPA, TPL, ULI, and additional national and local experts to develop city-specific 10-Minute Walk plans
  • Access and technical support to and for tools such as TPL’s ParkServe®Parkology, and other planning tools, as well as reports and best practice resources from TPL, ULI, and NRPA.
  • Peer-to-peer support and networking opportunities to share lessons learned and address challenges, including a private 10-Minute Walk city channel on Parkology.
  • National visibility through:
    • Articles in Parks and Recreation magazine, Open Space Blog, partner publications, and national press releases
    • Opportunities to present at national conferences, including the NRPA Annual Conference

Availability of Funds
Total amount of funding available: $520,000

Number of grants to be awarded: 12- 13

Grant amount: $40,000 each
Eligibility/Guidelines

  • The main applicant must be a local government park and recreation agency, (e.g., municipal park and recreation department, tribal recreation department, etc.)
    • Please see FAQ Document if you are a county park and recreation agency, park district, or any other type of non-city specific government park and recreation entity.
  • The Mayor of the city applying must be signed on to the 10-Minute Walk Campaign and provide a statement of support for this application. 
    • We are actively recruiting mayors and cities to join this effort. If your mayor is interested in joining they can sign this form and send to the 10-Minute Walk Team at 10minutewalk@nrpa.org.
  • At least 2 partners (outside of parks and recreation) must partner with you on this project and provide signed statements of support
    • If you have a local ULI and/or TPL office in your area, we strongly encourage you to gather letters or statements of support from these offices. These will count towards the two partners. 
    • 3 ULI District Council offices, located in technical assistance cities, will be eligible to apply for ULI’s 3-Day National Study Visit.
  • Applicants must demonstrate a clear interest and commitment to the campaign, strong project management, and leadership support.
Grant Requirements

Through this grant and technical assistance opportunity, cities will be responsible for several deliverables that result in a final 10-Minute Walk plan and commitment. To accomplish this, we expect that cities will:

  • Join and participate in monthly technical assistance calls (combination of individual, small group, and large group)
  • Attend an in-person training in late May to June
    • At least three people from your project team will be required to attend this training. Please set aside $3,600 in your program budget to pay for travel.
  • Develop a specific 10-Minute Walk commitment and corresponding action plan to make progress towards your commitment
  • Participate in evaluation efforts that will include submitting planning documents and completing pre-and post-surveys.

Applications are due by March 9th 11:59 PM ET and NRPA anticipates notifying applicants on or before April 1st.
