Who is PEERS?Peers Envisioning and Engaging in Recovery Services (PEERS) is a consumer-run non-profit organization that serves individuals with lived experience of mental health challenges, their families, and the community.
What is the Media Watch Program? As one component of the Alameda County Social Campaign, the Media Watch Program aims to eradicate stigma and discrimination surrounding mental health consumers by tracking mental health coverage in various media outlets, including newspaper, magazines, radio, movies, television, and the Internet. By identifying negative and unrealistic messages and explaining why they are harmful — in addition to finding and rewarding positive and accurate messages about people with mental health challenges — we hope to educate and enlighten both media powers and the public at large, ultimately fostering a more socially inclusive society.
To accomplish that, we are looking for volunteers who represent a diverse group of individuals including consumers, family members, and mental health service providers from a variety of racial/ethnic, linguistic, and cultural backgrounds. Participants will be asked to consistently track a media outlet of their choice and provide feedback of messages to PEERS in a timely manner.
