2020-2021 Teacher & Principal Advisory Cabinet Application

About the Opportunity

Applications are now due on Monday, July 6th at midnight.

Welcome
On behalf of the Center for Instructional Support at the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, we invite you to apply to participate in the 8th cohort of the Teacher & Principal Advisory Cabinet.

About the Cabinet
The Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) is pleased to convene the Teacher & Principal Advisory Cabinet each year as a way to recognize excellent educators, elevate teacher and principal voices at the state level, and provide opportunities for leadership. Cabinet members come together four times throughout the year to inform the development of new policies and resources. The Teacher and Principal Advisory Cabinets have played a critical role in shaping policy and driving resource development since 2012.

2020-2021 Advisory Cabinet: A Focus on Educator Evaluation, Professional Learning, and Culturally Responsive Teaching & Leading
As we approach the 2020-2021 school year, DESE needs educators' voices, ideas and feedback more than ever as we collectively navigate the ongoing impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on teaching and leading. The 2020-2021 Teacher & Principal Advisory Cabinet will bring teachers and school-level administrators together to share input and experiences relative to this unique context, and collaborate on creative, culturally responsive approaches to professional learning and educator evaluation. This includes continued growth and development through ongoing high-quality feedback, meaningful professional learning, and culturally responsive teaching and leading.

Because the organizational structures of elementary and secondary schools often lend themselves to distinct educator evaluation practices, the Cabinet will meet in elementary and secondary groups (see schedule below).

Who Should Apply?
In addition to classroom teachers and principals, the Teacher & Principal Advisory Cabinet is open to all educators who work with students across grade levels and content areas, including specialists, coaches, specialized instructional support personnel, department chairs, and assistant/vice principals. We seek a diverse group of educators and leaders, representing urban, suburban, and rural districts and reflecting the demographics of Massachusetts’s students, with an emphasis on the following characteristics:
  • Deep commitment to educator growth and development through evaluation
  • Experience leveraging educator evaluation to promote professional growth
  • Dedication to disrupting cycles of historic racism and inequities in education
  • Invested in exploring culturally responsive educator evaluation practices
  • A growth mindset and the ability to offer solutions-oriented insight to existing challenges in educator evaluation
Time Commitment
Educators in the Teacher & Principal Advisory Cabinet commit to attending four meetings over the course of the 2020-2021 academic year (in the event that the current public health crisis continues to impact the 2020-2021 academic year, all engagements will be conducted virtually). In addition to attendance at all four meetings listed below, participants will spend 2-4 hours in between meetings completing pre-work and/or other tasks related to exploring and advancing meaningful, equity-oriented educator evaluation practices. This may include attending on-site visits and sharing experiences with other cabinet members. Please consider this commitment carefully when applying. We receive more applications than we have spaces on the Cabinet, so it is important that all educators who apply and are accepted are able to participate fully.

All meetings will be held from 3:30-6:00pm at a location in Central Massachusetts (to be announced).
