CONSENT FOR PARTICIPATION IN A RESEARCH PROJECT

This research is being conducted by Dr. Tania Ionin from the Department of Linguistics of the University of Illinois. This research investigates the interpretation of structures containing numerals, such as more than five books, in a variety of the world’s languages. You must be at least 18 years old to participate in this study.

In this study, you will be asked to complete a brief questionnaire about your language background, and a survey asking you some questions about the use and interpretation of certain structures in your native language. The questionnaire and the survey will be presented on a computer screen, and they will be in English. You may complete the study at any location convenient to you: you will be provided with the url on which to complete the study.

After you complete this study, your responses will automatically be entered into an electronic database. When the study is complete, the results in the database will be analyzed and published. Your name and identity will not be included in the database nor in the published results. The researcher will keep the information you provide confidential. However, the service hosting this survey may have access to the data you submit and to the IP number of the computer on which you complete this test.  We cannot guarantee that this service will keep the information you submit confidential.

You will not need to put your name on any of the test screens: you will be assigned a subject number to put in, instead. You will also have the option of not putting in the subject number, in which case your results will be anonymous. If you do put in a subject number, the researcher may contact you later on with some follow-up questions about the use and interpretation of phrases like more than five books in your language. You are free not to answer these follow-up questions.

The study will last between 15 and 30 minutes, during which you may pause at your convenience. You will not be compensated for your participation. You are free to refuse to participate or to stop participating at any time with no penalty.

There is no risk in participating in this research beyond that encountered in everyday life. Your participation will not benefit you directly, but we hope the results will help us gain a better understanding of how people comprehend language.

By clicking on the “next page” button below, you acknowledge that you have read and understand the above consent form and voluntarily agree to participate in this study. Please print out a copy of this form for your records.

If you have any questions or would like to find out later about the results of the study, you can contact: Dr. Tania Ionin, at 1-217-333-7017, or at tionin@illinois.edu. If you have questions about your rights as a participant in this research, you can contact the University of Illinois Institutional Review Board at 1-217-333-2670, or at irb@uiuc.edu.
