This study aims to explore the perceptions of South Asian Muslim women regarding the influence of hijab on physical attractiveness, intelligence, and employability in the United States and the United Arab Emirates. There has been an increasing amount of media attention related to Muslims, especially after 9/11. As hijab is the most visible marker of Muslim identity, many countries are banning Muslim dress in an effort to curb what they fear as the Islamization of Western societies. In order to understand Muslim norms, researchers have been using a variety of methods to address the reasons that Muslim women choose to wear or not wear the hijab. Many of the researchers have used small sample sizes that provide only a glimpse into the lives of specific Muslim women and their individual circumstances. Also, researchers have focused on either Western countries or Muslim countries. This study serves to add to the current literature by comparing the perceptions of Muslim women in a Western context as well as an Islamic context. This study predicts that wearing or not wearing the hijab will have an effect on perceptions of attractiveness, intelligence, and employability among South Asian Muslim women. Furthermore, the study predicts that perceived discrimination influences some of these perceptions. Your responses to this survey will help us determine the accuracy of our predictions.
